Supplementary aids and services are defined as "aids, services and other supports that are provided in regular education classes, other education-related settings, and in extracurricular and nonacademic settings, to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent appropriate." [34 CFR 300.42] The IEP team determines which supplementary aids and services and other supports, if any, are to be provided to the student with a disability or on behalf of the student. Supplementary aids and services must be based on peer-reviewed research to the extent that research is available.
A clear description of any special instructions for supplementary aids and services should be included in the IEP. The description MUST include details relating to the conditions under which the supplementary service is required.
