IEP Process Reviews

In an effort to provide teachers with meaningful feedback and explicit guidance on both the procedural and substantive content of the IEP process, periodic reviews of the implementation of the IEP process should occur using the IEP Process Self-Monitoring/Guidance Document. This document will be provided to service providers so they may become familiar with best practices related to the IEP process and development. It is important to note the difference between the procedural and substantive content within the IEP process:

  • Procedural: Implementation of the procedures required by the law includes, but is not limited to, parent involvement, transition services and needs, proper IEP team membership, informed written consent, a review of the IEP at least once annually, consideration for reevaluation at least every 3 years, identification, assessment, placement in the appropriate LRE, and prior written notice.

  • Substantive: Development of an IEP that confers meaningful educational benefit to a student includes, but is not limited to, an IEP based on the individual student’s needs, development of measureable and meaningful annual goals, assessment and identification of all needs, linkage from assessments to goals and programming, and progress monitoring of goals and objectives.

Reporting

Monitoring of specific IDEA processes will occur routinely throughout the school year. This process includes running reports for overdue Reevaluations, Annual Reviews, and Progress Reports. Users have access to types of data on which reporting will occur. Results of overdue events will be communicated via email to the Case Manager with the Special Education Specialist copied on the email. Principals will receive reports of overdue events periodically throughout the year.
