Katherine Woo, a sophomore at the Fine Arts Center and Riverside High, recently received first place in the 2013 Hilton Head Symphony Youth Concerto competition. Katherine Woo, a sophomore at the Fine Arts Center and Riverside High, recently received first place in the 2013 Hilton Head Symphony Youth Concerto competition. Ms. Woo received a $1,000 honorarium and was granted a solo performance with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.

She currently attends the Juilliard Pre-College and studies with Mr. Masao Kawasaki and Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Converse College. She has been a member of the Symphony Orchestra of the Carolina Youth Symphony (CYS) for six years, and has been the concertmaster of the GCYO Young Artist Orchestra since 2011. She also participates in the Fine Arts Center’s chamber music program. Recently, Katherine was awarded 2nd prize and earned the Audience Award at the 2013 Salome Young Artists Competition.

Last summer, Katherine attended the Heifetz International Music Institute and studied with Catherine Cho, Andy Simionescu, Joan Kwuon, and Vera Tsu. While there, she traveled to Washington D.C. and performed the national anthem and “God Bless America” at the Washington Nationals baseball game. Additionally, she was selected as one of the 2nd prize winners in the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition and performed at Carnegie Hall in November.
