GCS Player of the Week - March 2, 2017
This weeks GCS Player of the Week features the 2017 State Wrestling Champion Eastside Eagles!
Eastside, the top ranked team in Class AAAA, put on a dominant showing throughout the playoffs, shutting out their opening three opponents by a score of 243-0. The Eagles defeated BHP 45-14 in the Upper State before knocking off Chapin for the AAAA title by a score of 59-11. The title is the Eagles first in Class AAAA after winning the Class AAA in 2016. It is also the 12th overall title for the program.
In the championship match Cruise Baker started things off at 126 with a win by decision, followed by Ryan Augustine with a pin at 132. Chapin got on the board at 138, but the Eagles bounced back to secure pins by Alex Brown (145) and Caleb Carillo (152). Ian Rodgers got a major decision at 160. Jack Beehler (170), David Maholtz (182) Tucker Allen (106), Jordie White (113) and Ben Maholtz (120) all recorded pins, while Deshawn Sullivan added a major decision at 220.
Four Eagles followed up the team championship with individual titles the following weekend. Jordie White claimed the AAAA crown at 113. Ian Rodgers won state at 160. David Maholtz took the 182 class and Deshawn Sullivan won at 220.
