Youth Leadership Greenville Logo

Greenville County School District is now accepting applications for the Youth Leadership Greenville (YLG) program. While this is the first year in which our school district is overseeing this program, it will be modeled similarly to Leadership Greenville. Developing our youth to serve in leadership capacities is key to the future success of our community, and this program is designed to identify potential leaders and challenge those youth to become engaged citizens.

Youth Leadership Greenville (YLG) is open to high school juniors in Greenville County Schools.  Students apply during their sophomore year to participate in their junior year of high school.  The cost to participants is $125 payable upon acceptance into the program. To insure the protection of instructional time as much as possible, YLG classes are slated to take place on public school holidays, snow days or in the evenings. While families are required to provide transportation to and from the Greenville County School District Office or nearby location for each of the sessions that comprise YLG, bus transportation will be provided for the full day session’s scheduled events.

The actual class dates will be sent once applicants have been accepted into the program. These classes will introduce YLG class participants to the history of the greater Greenville area, local human service agencies, Greenville’s rich culture of fine and performing arts, the civil and criminal justice systems, educational opportunities, and the role of the local government. The application must be completed in its entirety for the applicant to receive consideration. Please review the application before submitting to ensure that the information is complete and legible.

Applicants for Youth Leadership Greenville must complete and submit the YLG application, along with two letters of reference from a teacher, school counselor, coach or principal by Friday, June 22, 2018 for selection. .  Letters of reference need to be send to youthleadership@greenville.k12.sc.us. Please indicate your first and last name in the subject line when submitting your letters of reference.

The selection committee will consider each candidate’s involvement in extracurricular activities, past/current leadership roles, application essays, and letters of reference. Typically, two to three students will be selected per school based on number and strength of applications received.

In addition to YLG class sessions, members will be encouraged to volunteer in the community and will receive information about opportunities to get involved during the year. It is our hope that exposure to community volunteer opportunities will provide insights into the needs and resources of our community.

Students will be notified by August 2018 of their acceptance into YLG Class 13. School counselors will be notified and letters will be mailed to all applicants at that time. If selected, the participant will be required to submit the acceptance forms and program fee of $125 on the date specified in the acceptance letter. Should the $125 participation fee present a financial hardship, applicants may apply for a scholarship.
