Southside High ROTC Instructor Named WYFF-TV Golden Apple Teacher of the Year

Major Joseph Windley, Air Force Junior ROTC instructor at Southside High Academy, has been named WYFF-TV’s Golden Apple Teacher of the Year.

Major Joseph Windley, Air Force Junior ROTC instructor at Southside High Academy, has been named WYFF-TV’s Golden Apple Teacher of the Year. The Golden Apple Awards program, sponsored by BI-LO, rewards teachers who go above and beyond in their profession.

Major Windley, a retired Air Force pilot, has taught aerospace science at Southside since 1995. He also coaches wrestling, soccer, and girls’ golf. He was nominated for the award by a former student who is now attending college on a full ROTC scholarship. The Southside High Academy AFJROTC has earned many state and national awards for their performance.

Major Windley received a Bachelor's Degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical StateUniversity, a Master’s Degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University.

Rod Hill, mathematics teacher at Hughes Middle Academy, and Mary Grace Owen, special education teacher at Hillcrest High were finalists for the award.
