Local celebrities, students play for school funds, ‘Are You Smarter’ title

The TD Convention Center is the place to be this Saturday for the second annual “Are You Smarter Than a Greenville County Schools Fifth Grader?” event. Michelin and Greenville County Schools are bringing back the successful fundraiser this Saturday, August 20, at 7 p.m. at the TD Convention Center, formerly the Carolina First Center. The 2010 event drew a crowd of more than 1,200 and raised $175,000 for supplies for all Greenville County schools. This year’s effort has even bigger goals.

Once again, local celebrities and community leaders will match wits with some of the brightest fifth graders in the county for a night of family fun. Jeremiah Dew (J Dew), director of fun for the Greenville Drive, will again serve as master of ceremonies. Underwritten by Michelin and supported by a variety of local businesses, 100 percent of all funds raised will go directly to the public schools.

Celebrity contestants include Beth Bradley & Bill Ellis, Hosts of the Ellis & Bradley Morning Show on WSSL Radio; Gordon Dill, Reporter/Anchor for News 7, WSPA-TV; Guy Gardner, Former NASA Astronaut; Hawk Harrison & Tom Steele, Hosts of the Hawk & Tom Morning Show on B93.7 Radio; Sheriff Steve Loftis, Greenville County; Kenny Miles, Production Manager and host of The Quiet StormJAMZ 107.3 Radio; Nigel Robertson, News Anchor for News 4, WYFF-TV; Mayor Dennis Waldrop, City of Simpsonville, and Diana Watson, News Anchor for FOX Carolina, WHNS-TV.

 Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door while supplies last. Admission includes a hot dog supper and an evening of entertainment that is fun for the whole family. Doors open for dinner and games at 5 p.m. The contest begins at 7 p.m.
