Worthington Named State Career and Tech Counselor of the Year
Gwen Worthington, School Counselor at Golden Strip Career Center in Mauldin, is the 2019 SC Association of Career and Technical Education Counselor of the Year.
The award recognizes school counselors and career development professionals who are currently making significant contributions in career and technical education programs in their communities and/or states.
Recipients have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of CTE as a viable career option to a variety of audiences, including students and adults. They must also demonstrate exemplary efforts in helping students and/or adults evaluate their abilities, interests and talents that encourage them to develop academic and career goals aligned with career and technical education.
“I am proud of the role that I have played over the years in creating new and innovative opportunities for the students at my center, some of which have been adopted by other schools in the state,” Worthington said.
Worthington has been working to shape the futures of students in the Golden Strip area since 1993. “As a school counselor, my position is not only to continually work to connect students with the many opportunities available for success, but to follow them through the process. The first step is working with our high school students, their parents and counselors to see the advantages of CTE courses for all and enroll in those programs. Upon becoming a CTE student, the opportunities are plentiful and I am passionate to assist students in taking advantage of those opportunities.”
