Greenville County Schools to Honor the School Lunch Heroes Serving Healthy Meals
School Lunch Hero Day is May 6, 2016
Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering exceptional customer service, the café staffs of the Greenville County Schools Food and Nutrition Services department have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Greenville County Schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 6. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to 30 million of America’s students each school day.
“Our employees play a crucial role in the education process for our students. Numerous studies have proven that a hungry student is less focused and less prepared to succeed in the classroom,” said Joe Urban, Director of Food and Nutrition Services for Greenville County Schools. “Our 750 highly trained café staffs prepare and serve over 12 Million tasty and nutritious meals every year in Greenville County Schools. It is only through the tremendous dedication of these amazing School Lunch Heroes that we are able to meet the nutritional needs of our students every single day.”
The Greenville County Schools Food and Nutrition Services department has been recognized for providing some of the highest quality and nutritious school food in the country and was awarded the Golden Carrot Award by the Physician’s Committee on Responsible Medicine. The vast majority of our recipes are scratch-made utilizing the freshest ingredients available; preparing over 70,000 scratch-made meals to students every day would not be possible without our dedicated School Lunch Heroes.
Please join us in thanking these incredible foodservice professionals for their dedication to the students of Greenville County schools; they truly make #SchoolFoodRock every day in Greenville County Schools!
