Berea Middle School students learn about foods that were popular during the Depression.

Students in Susan Bramlette’s English I class at Berea Middle School are studying Russell Baker's memoir, Growing Up. This beautifully written memoir is about growing up during the Depression. BMS parents and grandparents were asked to bring foods that were popular during the Depression, including foods that cost very little and could feed a lot of people.  Some of the foods were ham, fried and baked chicken, baked spaghetti, barbecue, beef stew, deviled eggs, rice, green beans, deviled eggs, custard pies, apple pies, apple cakes, and other desserts. Everyone enjoyed the food, playing games, and listening to music from the1920s and 1930s.
