Greenville County Schools has released its 2016-17 calendar. The 2016-17 calendar has been on hold pending the State Department of Education’s (SDE) announcement of test dates.

The first day of school for students is Tuesday, August 16. The last day of school is Friday, June 2. State law requires that school districts begin school no earlier than the third Monday in August, and the calendar must include 180 days for students and 190 days for teachers.

2016-17 holidays are: Labor Day, September 5; Election Day, November 8; Thanksgiving Break, November 23-25; Winter Break, December 19-23 and 26-30; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 16; Presidents’ Day, February 20; Spring Break, April 10-14; and Memorial Day, May 29.

The last three days of school, May 31 - June 2, are half-days for students. Students will not attend school on Professional Development Workdays for teachers during the school year, which are October 13-14 and January 13.

Three school makeup days, in order of use, are: Makeup Day #1, March 16; Makeup Day #2, March 17; and Makeup Day #3, April 17. These days become student attendance days if days are missed earlier in the school year. Makeup days, not used, become school holidays.

The superintendent determines the school calendar after receiving recommendations from a calendar committee comprised of parents, teachers, principals, and district staff. The committee develops a recommended calendar based on input from parent groups, school faculties, and other employee groups.
