School Board to Consider During August COW Meeting on Tuesday, August 13

The Superintendent’s Recommended Assignment Plan for Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School will be discussed during the School Board’s Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 9:00 a.m., J. Floyd Hall Administrative Center (The Central Office), 301 East Camperdown Way, Greenville.

The recommended plan was developed after the Planning and Demographics Department’s initial proposal received public input and further review.  Input was reviewed and analyzed in keeping with the primary purpose of the school, which is to provide population relief to five middle schools: Beck, Bryson, Hillcrest, Mauldin, and Riverside.

The new state-of-the art middle school, scheduled to open in August 2014 in the ICAR/Millennium Campus, will feature a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) focus.  The curriculum is being designed so students can transition easily into this school with or without prior involvement in a project-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or STEAM (STEM plus the Arts) environment.

Under the recommended plan, the school would open in 2014 with about 300 sixth grade students. Seventh grade would be added in 2015 and eighth grade would be added in 2016 providing a projected school enrollment of about 900 students The school capacity is approximately 1,000 students.
