Building Construction combines craftsmanship, technical knowledge, problem-solving, and teamwork. Construction professionals use plans, measurements, tools, materials, and modern building methods to create and maintain the structures people rely on every day.
Enoreeās two-year Building Construction program is part of the South Carolina Architecture and Construction Career Cluster. Students learn through classroom instruction and extensive hands-on projects designed to build practical skills, safe work habits, and an understanding of professional construction standards.

Program Credits
Students earn two high school credits each semester and may earn up to eight credits during the two-year program. These credits count as electives toward South Carolina high school graduation requirements. One credit may fulfill the CATE/Foreign Language graduation requirement.

Year One: Building the Foundation
Building Construction 1 and 2 | Morning Session at Enoree
Year one introduces students to the essential skills needed to begin working in the construction industry while emphasizing safety, accuracy, responsibility, and teamwork. The program is open to rising 10th- and 11th-grade students who are prepared to make a two-year commitment.
Students begin by learning the safe use of hand and power tools, blueprint reading, measurement, layout, and construction math. Instruction also introduces the fundamentals of carpentry, electrical work, masonry, and building maintenance.
Hands-on projects allow students to apply these skills while learning how construction professionals plan work, select materials, follow specifications, inspect results, and maintain a safe and organized job site.
As students progress through Building Construction 2, instruction expands into framing, roofing, finishing, and more advanced project-based work. These experiences reflect many of the responsibilities found on professional construction sites.
Students work with a variety of building materials and techniques while developing the problem-solving, measurement, communication, and technical skills valued by employers. They are expected to complete projects carefully, follow established procedures, and take responsibility for the quality of their work.
By the end of year one, students have completed multiple projects that demonstrate their growing skills, safety knowledge, and attention to detail. This foundation prepares them for more complex projects, certification opportunities, and potential work-based learning experiences during year two.
Year Two: Advancing the Skills
Building Construction 3 and 4 | Afternoon Session at Enoree
Year two builds on the foundation developed during the first year and challenges students to complete advanced projects that reflect the expectations of the construction industry.
Instruction includes advanced framing, drywall, finishing, cabinet installation, and specialty work requiring greater precision, efficiency, and independence. Students continue to strengthen their blueprint reading, measurement, layout, carpentry, and electrical skills.
Leadership, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are also emphasized. Students learn that successful construction projects depend on individuals completing their responsibilities safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Students in Building Construction 3 and 4 complete complex projects that require them to combine multiple skills. Projects may involve blueprint interpretation, layout, framing, electrical work, carpentry, finishing, and careful inspection of completed work.
Students are also introduced to shop and site management practices, including estimating, scheduling, material planning, organization, and safety oversight. Instruction emphasizes efficiency, responsibility, and accuracy while students work toward professional expectations.
Work-based learning may allow eligible students to apply their classroom and lab instruction with local contractors and construction companies. These experiences provide exposure to active workplaces, professional responsibilities, employer expectations, and real construction projects.
Students also prepare for the CTECS Building Construction certification and may pursue other approved credentials. Their combination of technical knowledge, hands-on experience, credentials, and workplace skills can support a transition into apprenticeships, technical college, or entry-level construction employment.
Career Opportunities
Building Construction can lead to careers involving skilled trades, equipment operation, project planning, site supervision, engineering, and construction management.
Carpenter
Carpenters measure, cut, shape, assemble, install, and repair building materials. Their work may include framing, doors, cabinets, trim, flooring, and other structural or finish components.
Equipment Operator
Construction equipment operators control machinery used to move materials, prepare sites, grade land, and support building projects. The work requires coordination, safety awareness, and mechanical understanding.
Project Manager
Construction project managers coordinate schedules, materials, budgets, contractors, safety expectations, and project progress from planning through completion.
Civil Engineer
Civil engineers plan, design, and help supervise infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, drainage systems, utilities, and public facilities. This pathway generally requires a college degree and professional preparation beyond high school.
Skills for Success
Successful construction students and professionals combine technical ability with safe, dependable workplace habits. Important skills and expectations include:
- Safety awareness: Follow shop and job-site rules and use required personal protective equipment.
- Attention to detail: Read measurements accurately, follow plans, and carefully inspect completed work.
- Construction math: Apply calculations, fractions, measurements, geometry, and layout procedures to building projects.
- Manual dexterity: Use tools and materials safely while completing detailed construction tasks.
- Problem-solving: Recognize challenges, consider possible solutions, and adjust plans when needed.
- Teamwork: Communicate clearly, complete assigned responsibilities, and contribute to shared project goals.
Work Environment
Construction work may take place indoors or outdoors and can involve changing temperatures and weather conditions. Students must be prepared to stand, bend, kneel, climb ladders, move materials, and follow safety procedures while using appropriate protective equipment.

Graduation and college admission note: Credits earned through this program count as electives toward South Carolina high school graduation requirements. One credit may fulfill the CATE/Foreign Language graduation requirement. Most four-year colleges do not accept career center courses as substitutes for foreign language courses required for college admission. Students should review admission requirements with their school counselor.
