Emergency Medical Technician

Prepare to Serve During Medical Emergencies
Emergency medical services professionals provide care during some of the most urgent and difficult moments people face. Emergency Medical Technicians assess patients, provide immediate treatment, communicate with other responders, and help transport patients safely to medical facilities.
Enoree Career Center is working toward the possible addition of a one-year Emergency Medical Technician program for the 2027–2028 school year. If approved, the program would be part of the South Carolina Health Science Career Cluster and would combine classroom instruction, hands-on simulations, and approved clinical experiences.
The proposed program would help students develop medical knowledge, critical-thinking skills, professionalism, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm while responding to emergencies.

- History, structure, and responsibilities of emergency medical services
- Medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Patient assessment for medical and trauma emergencies
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and airway management
- Bleeding control, shock management, and injury stabilization
- Emergency communication, documentation, and teamwork
- Scenario-based simulations and possible clinical experiences

Certification opportunities are tentative and will depend on final program approval, state requirements, instructional partnerships, student eligibility, and the approved curriculum.
Tentative Program Status
EMT is not currently an active Enoree program. Enoree hopes to offer the program beginning with the 2027–2028 school year, but it remains subject to final approval, staffing, facilities, scheduling, partnerships, and student demand.
Proposed Program Length
The current proposal is for a one-year program serving eligible 12th-grade students. The final grade-level eligibility, session availability, course sequence, and number of credits will be announced if the program receives approval.

Proposed One-Year Program
EMT 1 and 2 | Tentative Schedule and Course Sequence
If approved, the proposed EMT program would introduce students to the fundamentals of emergency medical care through classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory practice, and scenario-based training.
Students would study safety, professionalism, communication, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, patient assessment, trauma care, and common medical emergencies. Training would emphasize accurate decision-making, compassionate patient care, and effective teamwork.
The current concept is a full-year program intended primarily for 12th-grade students. Final age requirements, prerequisites, application procedures, session assignments, and credit information will be established during the approval process.
Students may practice CPR, airway management, bleeding control, patient movement, vital-sign assessment, medical documentation, and emergency response procedures in a supervised setting.
The proposed curriculum may also include clinical observations, ambulance ride-alongs, or other approved experiences. Any clinical or field experience would depend on program partnerships, student eligibility, transportation, scheduling, insurance, health requirements, and applicable state regulations.
Students who successfully complete the approved coursework and meet all age, academic, clinical, examination, and state requirements may become eligible to pursue South Carolina EMT certification after graduation. Final requirements will be communicated before students apply.
Potential Career Pathways
EMT training can provide a foundation for careers in emergency medical services, fire and rescue, healthcare, public safety, and emergency management. Many advanced careers require additional education, experience, certification, or professional licensure.
Emergency Medical Technician
EMTs assess patients, provide basic emergency treatment, stabilize injuries, perform CPR, control bleeding, document care, and transport patients to medical facilities.
Paramedic
Paramedics provide advanced emergency medical care, including medication administration, cardiac monitoring, advanced airway management, and leadership during complex emergency responses. Additional education and certification are required.
Firefighter-EMT
Many fire departments employ personnel who are trained in both fire response and emergency medical care. Additional firefighter training, physical requirements, and department credentials are required.
Healthcare Professional
EMT experience can provide useful preparation for further education in nursing, respiratory care, emergency medicine, physician-assistant studies, and other healthcare fields.
Skills for Success
Emergency medical services require technical knowledge, emotional maturity, physical readiness, and dependable professional habits. Important skills include:
- Adaptability: Respond to changing conditions, patient needs, and emergency environments.
- Communication: Speak clearly and calmly with patients, families, partners, dispatchers, and healthcare professionals.
- Decision-making: Apply training and sound judgment quickly during time-sensitive situations.
- Emotional control: Remain composed while helping people during stressful, painful, or traumatic events.
- Teamwork: Coordinate effectively with EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement officers, nurses, and physicians.
- Physical readiness: Safely lift, move, position, and assist patients while following proper procedures.
Professional Expectations
Students interested in EMT should be prepared for demanding coursework, hands-on practice, medical terminology, close attention to detail, mature communication, and exposure to realistic emergency scenarios. Final physical, academic, health, background, and clinical requirements will be announced if the program is approved.

Clinical, emergency-services, healthcare, and work-based learning partners will be identified as part of the program-development and approval process. No clinical placement, ambulance ride-along, certification, or employment partnership is guaranteed at this time.
Graduation and college admission note: If approved, credits earned through this program are expected to count as electives toward South Carolina high school graduation requirements. Final credit information, including whether a credit may fulfill the CATE/Foreign Language graduation requirement, will be confirmed before applications begin. Career center courses generally do not replace foreign language courses required for admission to many four-year colleges. Students should review graduation and college admission requirements with their school counselor.
