Principal's Welcome

Jane Garraux

Dear Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School Community

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the first newly constructed Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS, and Math (STEAM) Middle School in the Greenville County School District. The success of our school demonstrates a commitment by the Greenville County School District to support the national STEM/STEAM initiative. I am honored to be the principal of this innovative, state of the art middle school.

Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School (PJFMS) students receive a rigorous, well-rounded education using an inquiry and project-based learning model. Our goal is to create an environment of inclusion, enjoyment of learning and exploration where all children are encouraged to succeed. Through this interdisciplinary, hands-on approach our students are given the necessary tools and nurturing so they may grow individually and ultimately reach their highest potential. The key to success is our high standards, both in academics and behavior, for all our students.

Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School offers the traditional core courses, as well as traditional related arts courses, but what makes PJFMS different is the combination of how and where these courses will be taught. As previously mentioned, PJFMS students are taught predominantly through the project-based learning model. Through projects, students learn academic content, practice 21st Century skills such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking and create high quality, authentic products and presentations.

The building is designed around this curriculum and its structures support all aspects of our STEAM curriculum. The building is divided into nine learning communities. A group of students are assigned to a learning community and will share the same math, English Language Arts, science and social studies teachers. This learning community or team concept allows for a small school, cohesive atmosphere for our students. Some amazing features include, but are not limited to the following: flexible learning spaces that can be easily adapted based on the lesson, dry erase writable walls in all the learning communities, prototype galleries available to display student work, accessible labs on each floor, a TV Broadcasting studio and an art room with a kiln.

Additionally, it is our hope to develop multiple partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. We are committed to providing real world experiences, promoting an awareness of current workforce and career opportunities and establishing a positive and worthwhile impact on the lives of our children that will surpass all previous expectations.

Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School opened for the 2014 – 2015 school year with approximately 340 incoming sixth graders and now includes sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes. We look forward to continuing our positive school culture and to working with each of you as we move forward.

Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School – An Innovative Approach – Full STEAM Ahead!
