CogAT/Iowa 2nd Grade Assessments
ALL 2nd Grade Parents: During the week of October 7th-10th, your children will be taking the Cognitive Aptitude Test (CogAT) & Iowa Assessments. Please make sure students get plenty of sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast each morning. These assessments are used to qualify for gifted and talented identification and possible admission to the Charles Townes Center Program here at Sterling School. If at all possible, do not schedule medical or other appointments on these days. We encourage all students to arrive on time so testing can begin on time. Please contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Starkes with any questions.

Kwame Mbalia Author Visit October 2nd
Kwame is coming to Sterling School on Thursday, October 2nd. He will visit with grades 3rd-6th.
Get ready for your visit with Kwame Mbalia and his new book Jax Freeman and the Tournament of Spirits (Jax Freeman #2)! All books available for pre-order will be delivered to school before his visit and signed by Kwame.
About the Author:
Kwama Mbalia is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and the publisher of Freedom Fire, an imprint of Disney Hyperion devoted to stories about the Black diaspora by Black creators. His debut middle-grade novel, Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, was awarded a Coretta Scott King Author Honor, and it was followed by Tristan Strong Destroys the World and Tristan Strong Keeps Punching. I Belong! 25-26 PTA Reflections Theme!
The 2025-2026 National PTA Reflections program is here, and this year’s theme is “I Belong!” This powerful theme invites students to explore and express their thoughts, emotions and ideas in the arts. Whether your student is passionate about dance choreography, film, production, music composition, photography, literature, or visual arts, this is their chance to chose their creativity and share their unique perspective.
“I Belong!” will inspire students from across the nation to create original works that reflect their personal journeys and experiences. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of something special! We can’t wait to see what our students create!

Greenville County Schools will offer the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on Monday, October 13, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Charles Townes Center (Directions) to students who reside in Greenville County but are not currently enrolled in a South Carolina public school that offers aptitude testing.
The CogAT assessment is a three-battery multiple-choice aptitude assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. Each section of the assessment takes approximately 45 minutes to complete, and the entire assessment takes three to four hours including breaks. A minimum score of 93% national percentile rank on any CogAT subtest (verbal, nonverbal, or quantitative) meets the state's criteria for the aptitude dimension of GT identification.
Interested families must pre-register via the Student Registration for CogAT Aptitude Assessment Form by Monday, October 6. There will be no walk-ups or late registrations.
