Major Joseph Windley – Senior Aerospace Science Instructor
Major Windley is a graduate of North Carolina A&T University, and received his Masters Deg
ree from Central Michigan University. He is a Senior Instructor Navigator with over 3000 flying hours, and has received numerous military decorations and awards. The high point of his Air Force Career was when he was selected Top Logistic Plan and Programs Branch Chief in the Air Force in 1993. Major Windley has also been selected as Teacher of the Year at Southside High, and has received the Greenville County Sally Mae First
Class Teacher’s Award. He is married and has two sons.
Senior Master Sergeant Kathy Hodge – Aerospace Science Instructor
Sergeant Hodge started teaching at SHS in August, 2005. She retired after 20 years serving the U.S. Air Force in May, 19
96. her Air Force career included 18 years as a recruiter for the Air Force Reserve. Sergeant Hodge has a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey. She has a 16 year old son who is currently attending J.L. Mann Academy
Master Sergeant Ken Gause – Aerospace Science Instructor
Sergeant Gause is the newest JROTC instructor on the staff. He began his teaching career here at SHS in August, 2005 after his 20 year retirement from the Air Force in July, 2005. During his 20 years he served as an Air Transportation Specialist in places such as NC, Turkey, Hawaii and Arizona. Sergeant Gause earned his Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Administration in 1991 from Saint Leo College and a Masters Degree in Instructional and Technology Psychology from the University of Oklahoma in 1995. He resides in Greenville with his wife, Sonya and their two children, Andrea and Dominique.
The Goal of AFJROTC is to instill values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment in high school students.
The Southside High School AFJROTC Program has been a nationally recognized Distinguished Unit for the past three consecutive years. The AFJROTC Drill Team has been an award winning competition team for the past six years in the Southeast Region.
