SCAACE Awards Presented to Two Lifelong Learning Staff
The South Carolina Association of Adult and Community Educators (SCAACE) recently presented Carolyn Foster and Sheila Brock Adult Education awards. This professional organization of Adult Educators presented two regional awards to Lifelong Learning Adult Education staff as outstanding employees. Each Adult Education program can nominate deserving employees. The award divisions are Para Professional, Part Time Teacher of the Year, and Full Time Teacher of the Year. These awards are announced at the state-wide summer meeting to recognize the dedicated people that make Adult Education a special place to work so we can serve the undereducated citizens of our state.
Carolyn Foster, who is the receptionist at Lifelong Learning, was recognized recently as the "Best Para-Professional for Region 1 Adult Education Programs". Ms. Foster sees a job that needs to be done and she does it. If she doesn't know how to do something she figures it out. She is always pleasant, professional, and is competent in every task she performs. Although Carolyn did not have any background in education, she quickly learned all she needed to know about the program in Adult Education. She combines knowledge with that special gift of excellent customer when serving everyone who enters our building. The students and staff at Lifelong Learning appreciate the able assistance and positive attitude Carolyn Foster brings to her job every day. We are proud that she has been honored with this award.
Sheila Brock, high school units Social Studies teacher, began her career in Adult Education eight years ago after spending 10 years at a local high school. She has developed courses in US History, Economics, Government, Global Studies, and Law Education that are aligned to South Carolina Standards. One of the special things that caught the eye of the judges is how she keeps an individual chart for each student so they can stay on track for graduation. She takes the time to send texts to every student who misses two days of class. Ms. Brock's state-wide reputation made her the perfect candidate to present at a two day seminar in Columbia where she taught "Teaching Social Studies in the Adult Education Classroom" to other adult educators. All her information can be adapted to GED or Units classes. It is easy to see why Sheila is the perfect person to receive "Part Time Teacher of the Year".
