FAQ about Chromebooks
Will I have to pay a fee?
All students will pay a technology fee each year to help cover the cost of one cracked screen repair and an additional minor repair (cracked hinge covering or a non-functioning touchpad). Fees assessed: $25 for students who pay regular lunch prices, $15 for reduced lunch students, and $5 for free lunch student. A debt or fee owed will be charged to the student's account if he or she has not paid the annual Chromebook technology fee before distribution. Students will not be able to purchase a parking pass or participate in some of our student activities.
Can I decorate or write on my chromebook?
No. No additional permanent markings of any kind (stickers, engraving, permanent ink pen, tape, etc) should be placed on the Chromebook. While the devices are issued to students, they are still district-owned property.
What happens if my chromebook is damaged?
Damage should be reported immediately. Students should not attempt repairs themselves or take the Chromebook to a third party vendor for repair. Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook issued to them by the District. Chromebooks that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to Mrs. Kicker in the library between 8-8:45am each school day. One accidental damage or one screen repair is covered by the early technology fee. Any additional repairs per year are not covered. Students will be required to pay for additional damages. A new Chromebook will not be issued unless the charge of the repair or the full price of the Chromebook is paid. Please note accidental damage does not cover the replacement for a lost or missing Chromebook or Chromebook charger.
What should I do if I have lost my chromebook?
Students should report the lost Chromebook to Mrs. Kicker in the library. The student must complete and return a missing chromebook form. Once the form is returned, Mrs. Kicker will review replacement options with the student and his or her parents. Students who obtain a timely police report from the local police may be eligible for a free Chromebook replacement in certain limited circumstances. The technology fee does not cover the cost of replacing a missing or lost Chromebook or Chromebook charger. Students who are issued a replacement will be responsible for paying Greer High School the $286.00 replacement cost prior to receiving a replacement.
Will I receive a chromebook case?
Cases are not provided with the Chromebooks. Parents and students are encouraged to purchase a padded case in order to further protect Chromebooks from damage. The option to purchase a personalized Greer High School Chromebook case may be available soon through our school store and PTSA. Cases for the Dell Chromebook 11 (Non-touch screen) Model Number 3120 can be purchased from a variety of vendors, including Amazon. 6. What if I lose my charger? If a student loses his or her charger or wishes to buy an additional charger for the Chromebook, the AC power adapter should be compatible with our Chromebook model - Dell 11, Model 3120. Most standard laptop 65 W AC power adapters are compatible and can be purchased locally at Best Buy or Office Depot for an average cost of $20.00-$30.00.
Can I print from my Chromebook?
Yes. Students will be able to print from their Chromebooks to the Media Center printers. The default printer for black/white prints is the Media01 printer. For color printing, students should select Media02. Every student will receive 20 black print copies total per month with remaining balance rolling over to no more than 35 copies. Students may purchase additional prints for 10 for $1.00. Students must pay for color copies: 1-2 $.25, 3-4 $.50, 5-6 $.75, 7-8 $1.00 If a student does not use all their prints during a month, up to 10 prints can be carried over into the next month. Unused prints will enable students to potentially accumulate a maximum total of 40 prints for the month.. Students also will have the option to purchase additional prints (which can be used for both black/white printing and color). The charge for adding additional prints to a student account is $1.00 for every 10 extra. Our school printers are for educational use only.
