School Messenger
February 27, 2015
Though our week has been short, we have had another very special day here at the school. We celebrated Black History Month by having a Freedom Walk, and staff members did a great job of preparing bulletin board displays and voice messages highlighting the contributions African Americans have made to all of us in many fields of endeavor. Mr. Benjamin Downs was a special guest of Ms. Anita Davis’ class, and we were pleased to have him with us as he was very involved in the Civil Rights movement here in Greenville. He was a member of “The Greenville Eight”, a group that was instrumental in integrating the Greenville County Library. Many thanks to Samantha Stansell and her committee for doing a great job of planning and directing our Freedom March
On a sad note, we were informed this morning of the death of Elizabeth Piper’s grandfather. Elizabeth was with him at the time he passed away, and though his death was not unexpected, this is certainly a very difficult time for her and her family. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.
I hope many of you parents have marked your calendar for March 18 and will plan to attend the PTA luncheon they have scheduled for that day. Mr. Don Clardy, a local attorney, will be here to talk with families about legal aspects of caring for children with severe disabilities as they grow up. I have had a couple of correspondences from him, and he is excited about meeting with you and providing guidance that will help you through some challenging aspects of the years to come. Sharon Russo is setting this up, and she will be sending home an invitation with more information and with a form for you to sign if you plan to come.
Good news, Mr. Warren Bolos has been chosen as our staff member of the month for March. Warren, as our orderly, is an integral part of our Washington Center family, and he is available to all of us to help out in any way possible. Warren loves our students and is always kind and patient --- great choice for staff member of the month.
I think I mentioned that last week some of us were going to have dinner with the Mauldin Knights of Columbus group. We did just that, had a delicious dinner, and received a generous check for more than $2300. Thank you, thank you, Knights of Columbus! We will be using some of the money to outfit the ball pit in the multisensory room with items that we can keep a little cleaner.
PTA next week on March 5. We will be meeting over on the Hollis campus, and I am sure the group will be working on plans for the Walk and Roll on April 25th. Don’t forget to send in your registrations and donations as this is PTA’s biggest fund raiser of the year and it is lots of fun as well.
