Where in the World is Montague?

Our theme this year at Blythe is "Around the World in 180 days!"  Montague the Bear will give clues each morning from a French or Spanish country.  Students will try to guess which country Montague is visiting that week, and will drop their answers in a special box in the Media Center.  A winner will be drawn each Friday.

Clues for the Week

Monday, October 26, 2009 - This country became a French colony in 1896, which explains why French is still spoken in towns and is the language of business today.  French is the second language, while Malagasy is this country’s first language.  In 1960, this country gained its independence.  Green and red are two of the colors that can be found on its flag.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - This tropical country only has two seasons—dry and rainy.  The dry season lasts from May until November, and the rainy season goes from December to April.  Tropical cyclones bring torrential rains and flooding to the land.  The rains cause erosion, but humans also cause damage by clear-cutting the rain forests for farmland.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 - This country is isolated.  Three-fourths of the animals that live here don’t live anywhere else, which includes most of its mammals and half of its bird population.  If you visit, some of the habitats that you can explore are coral beaches, lagoons, and rain forests.  Make sure to bring your sunscreen!

Thursday, October 29, 2009 - The national symbol of this French-speaking country is the baobab tree, which is also called the monkey bread tree.  The tree’s large size, age, and hollow trunk make it a practical place to find and store water and provide shelter.  Natives are also known to perform sacred rights, and bury and remember their ancestors near these trees.  The tree is adapted to the dry climate by storing water in its trunks.

Friday, October 30, 2009 - This country is the fourth largest island in the world.  It is just smaller than the state of Texas.  It is a land mass that broke away from the continent of Africa over 150 million years ago, and humans settled on the land over 2,000 years ago.  This country has been given the nickname, The Great Red Island, due to its soil.
