Our Mission: The PTSA at Hughes Academy is a collaborative body of parents, teachers, administration and students who share a commitment to improving the education, health, and safety of all children. The mission of the PTSA is to make every child's potential a reality by empowering and engaging families and communities to advocate for all children.

Volunteering: The PTSA at Hughes Academy provides many opportunities to volunteer and participate in school activities and events. All parents and caregivers are welcome and encouraged to become part of the PTSA.

Proposed change to the By-laws

It has come to our attention that our 2020-2021 Executive Committee slate, as previously presented, is not inline with our current Bylaws which state:


ARTICLE VI: OFFICERS - ELECTION, QUALIFICATIONS AND VACANCIES, Section 1 "The elected officers of this association should be President; 1 (number) Vice President(s), one of whom may be a President-Elect; a Secretary; and a Treasurer; and shall be hereafter referred to as the Executive Committee."
This means that currently only the President, President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer need to be elected by the General Membership (via the online link this year). In accordance with our Bylaws, the additional positions that have been listed as part of our slate in the past are actually appointed and do not need to be voted on by the General Membership at this time. The people that have agreed to fill the additional positions (Treasurer-Elect, Public Relations, School Support, and Ways & Means) are still the same, we have just voted to approve more positions than our Bylaws currently require.
In addition, according to the SCPTA, there is an error in our Bylaws regarding the total number of members that constitute a quorum. According to our Bylaws, the number should be "at least equal to the number of officers and committee chairs, plus 5% of the total membership" and should be at least 35 members instead of the stated 15.This does not need to be voted on as it is being edited by the SCPTA as a clerical error for the remainder of this year.

The amended 2020-2021 PTSA Executive Committee Slate is as follows:
President - Candace Williams
President-Elect - Kimberly Shivell
Secretary - Laura Cox
Treasurer - Mary Duff Rayneri

This amended slate will need to be posted for an additional 15 days before the General Membership can vote remotely.
At a minimum, the Bylaws must be revisited and voted on by the General Membership every 3 years. The current Bylaws were approved in September 2017 and expire in September 2020.
