Betty G. Moore

A true pioneer in women’s athletics, Mrs. Moore helped shape not only Carolina High School’s athletic program but also the growth of women’s sports throughout the Upstate. She served as a member of the Carolina High School faculty from 1972 until 2001, holding many roles during her tenure—both official and unofficial—including teacher, coach, mentor, “mama,” and dean.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Moore mentored hundreds of teachers and coaches and positively influenced thousands of students and student-athletes. Her leadership extended beyond Carolina High School, as she became the first female athletic director in the Upstate, helping pave the way for women in athletic leadership.

Mrs. Moore consistently modeled class, dignity, and integrity in everything she did, values she instilled in those she worked with—especially her Lady Trojans.

Her coaching accomplishments include serving as an assistant coach for the North Team in the 1986 SCBCA North/South All-Star Game and as head coach of the North Team in the 1991 game. Over the course of her career, Coach Moore compiled 317 victories, won four Upper State Championships, and captured the 1997 AA State Basketball Championship. She also earned numerous region, county, and state Coach of the Year honors and was inducted into the SCBCA Hall of Fame.

Mrs. Moore’s legacy as a coach, educator, and trailblazer continues to inspire generations of Carolina High School athletes and the broader Upstate athletic community.

Krystal Queen Scott was a standout multi-sport athlete at Carolina High School, competing in volleyball, basketball, and track during her freshman year. In her junior and senior seasons, she focused on volleyball and basketball, where she established herself as one of the school’s most accomplished athletes. In track, she also qualified for the Upper State Championships.

In volleyball, Krystal earned All-Region honors in 1997 and was named Region Player of the Year in 1998. She also received All-State recognition for her outstanding performance on the court.

Her greatest impact came in basketball, where she finished her high school career with an impressive 2,027 points. She was a four-time All-Region selection and a three-time SCBCA All-State honoree. In 1998, she was widely recognized as Player of the Year by multiple organizations, including her region, the 2A classification, The Greenville News, the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA), and Gatorade.

Following her remarkable high school career, Krystal earned a basketball scholarship to Clemson University. During her collegiate career, she led Clemson in assists and ranks ninth all-time in career assists per game in program history.

After college, Krystal continued her basketball career professionally with the Njardvik Basketball Club in Iceland.

Germany Thompson was an exceptional three-sport athlete at Carolina High School, excelling in football, basketball, and track. During his high school career, he earned All-State honors in both football and track and was named All-County and All-Conference in football, basketball, and track.

In football, Germany was recognized as Conference Player of the Year, while in track he earned Conference Athlete of the Year honors. On the basketball court, he was a two-time All-State selection and finished his career as one of the school’s most accomplished scorers.

Germany’s remarkable athletic ability is still reflected in the Carolina High School record books. He holds the school record for career rushing yards in football with 2,320 yards, career basketball points with 1,524, and the track and field long jump record at 22’8.5”.

Following high school, Germany continued his football career at the University of New Mexico, where he was selected as a Mountain West All-Conference wide receiver and earned multiple Player of the Week honors. He led the Mountain West Conference in both receiving yards and touchdown receptions.

Germany’s success continued at the professional level when he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and is recognized as a member of the Baltimore Ravens’ Super Bowl XXXV Championship team.

Kimberly McKinney was a dedicated three-sport athlete at Carolina High School, competing in softball, volleyball, and basketball. As a standout catcher, she earned All-Conference honors in softball and was a key member of the 1986 State Championship team. She was also a two-time All-Conference selection in both volleyball and basketball and was named Softball Conference MVP.

Following her high school career, Kimberly received an athletic scholarship to Mars Hill University, where she lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball, continuing to demonstrate her versatility and commitment as a student-athlete.

After college, Kim returned to Carolina High School as the varsity girls’ softball coach. Through her patience, knowledge, skill, and positive leadership, she inspired and motivated her players to grow and compete at a higher level. Under her guidance, a young and relatively inexperienced team developed into a competitive squad and achieved one of the most successful seasons the program had experienced in many years.

Kim’s contributions as both an athlete and a coach reflect her lasting impact on Carolina High School athletics.

Paul Brown was a standout athlete at Carolina High School, competing in both basketball and baseball. In basketball, he earned All-Conference honors on the Region 1 4A team during his junior year and again as a senior, when he was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Following high school, Paul continued his education and athletic career at North Greenville College before transferring to the University of South Carolina.

Paul dedicated more than 40 years to education and coaching, including nine years at Carolina High School. As a head basketball coach, he compiled an impressive 413 career victories and led his teams to 20 playoff appearances. His coaching achievements include six region championships, eight region runner-up finishes, and a Lower State Championship in 1982.

Throughout his coaching career, Paul was selected three times as an All-Star Coach and earned Region Coach of the Year honors seven times. His long-standing commitment to student-athletes and the game of basketball has left a lasting impact on the programs and communities he served.

Rachel Bullard Sloan was an outstanding multi-sport athlete at Carolina High School, competing in volleyball, basketball, and softball throughout her five-year high school career. In addition to her athletic success, she excelled academically and was named the Class Valedictorian in 1997.

Rachel achieved remarkable success on the basketball court, earning Region II 2A Player of the Year honors four times. In 1997, she was recognized as the SCBCA 2A Player of the Year and the SCACA Athlete of the Year. She also played a key leadership role on Carolina High School’s 1997 State Championship basketball team.

Following high school, Rachel continued her basketball career at Presbyterian College on scholarship. During her collegiate career, she earned numerous South Atlantic Conference honors and was later inducted into the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame.

Rachel also found success in coaching, serving as head coach at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina. There, she was named HBCU Coach of the Year while helping develop student-athletes both academically and athletically.

Tonya Morton was a talented multi-sport athlete at Carolina High School, competing in volleyball, basketball, softball, and track during her freshman year. She became especially known for her accomplishments on the basketball court, where she was a five-year member of the varsity team.

During her basketball career, Tonya earned All-Region honors three times and was named All-State twice. Her outstanding performance also earned her a selection to the prestigious North–South All-Star Game during her senior year.

Tonya surpassed the 1,000-point milestone during her junior season and finished her high school career with an impressive total of 1,519 points. Over her time at Carolina, she earned nine varsity letters, reflecting both her athletic talent and dedication across multiple sports.

Following her successful high school career, Tonya received a basketball scholarship to Georgia State University, where she continued her athletic and academic pursuits.
