At Southside, parents, students, teachers, and the community are all partners in the education process.

 

Academic Excellence for All Students
Rigorous standards: next year Southside will apply both SCIB Middle Years Program design and International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years standards to all 9th and 10th grade classes.

Outstanding advanced placement (AP) and IB opportunities: the highest ranking non-Southside, Newsweek's top SC high schoolresidential high school in South Carolina on  Newsweek Magazine's list of top high schools in the nation since 1999 ( 2003, 2005).

Special programs and tutoring: for students at all levels (see the GE College Bound Program).
 
Diversity
The most internationally and culturally diverse high school in the area—one of its greatest educational strengths.

Partnership

A unique partnership among students,General Electric Company teachers, parents, and the community. We recently received a grant of $100,000 per year for a 5 year period from the General Electric Company, and have partnerships with the middle schools that feed us as well as the colleges we feed. Modern computer labs equipped with software such as SolidWorks 3D CAD and offering courses like AP Computer Science.

 

Foreign Languages
One of the area's most complete foreign language programs: 4 years of Spanish,  French, and German (see El Platillo Latino and Le Cliche ) with A modern computer equipped foreign language lab

 

Math and Science
The highest levels of math and science available in Greenville: a full year of math beyond BC calculus; Biology, Chemistry, and Physics classes meeting both AP & IB standards; the only area school offering the complete calculus based AP Physics course.

 

Arts and Humanities
A complete offering including drama, music, and visual arts. Check out the orange bar at the left of each page for examples of student art.

Student Research/Innovation

Outstanding opportunities for student research  and innovation. The school is continuing its active participation in the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam program.

Southside,best of web 2005 Southside was a 2005 winner of the Palmeto Gold Award. Its web site was named as the best of Greenville County Schools

Southside High School (southsidehigh.org) is a select school and the center for international Southside commons areastudies in Greenville. It's the home of the first International Baccalaureate (IB) program in South Carolina. This outstanding program is administered from Switzerland and recognized world wide as a standard of excellence.

Southside has drawn international students from every continent in the world except Antarctica. This helps create a culturally diverse environment in which students can learn and grow.

The school has achieved state, national, and international recognition in many of its extracurricular programs including athletics, forensics, academic team, computer science team, math team, and its literary magazine.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

The IB program provides the highest level and the largest number of AP and IB course available to high school students in the Greenville area. It's for students who want academic challenge.

 

Want to go to Harvard, Yale, or MIT?
IB students get special consideration when applying

If you qualified for the Duke University TIPS program or SC Junior Scholars award based on middle school SAT or PSAT test scores or are interested in attending a top college like Harvard, Yale, or MIT or are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, law, engineering, computer science or other professions you should seriously consider the Southside IB program.

JROTC - Major Windley

Southside has an active Air Force junior JROTC program which gives students leadership as well as technical training.

 

Forensics - Erikson Bynum

Southside's forensics program is nationally ranked and second to none in the Greenville area. Forensics gives students the chance to develop their speaking and communication skills.

 

Robotics /Engineering - Tom Rogers

Southside has a 2000 square foot robotics fabrication shop along with a computer lab equipped with SolidWorks CAD for developing robotics projects. In 2004-2005 The school was one of only 13 schools nationwide to receive a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam grant for up to $10,000. Our InvenTeam is currently working on perfecting a stair climbing robot for firefighters.
