Internet and Technology Acceptable Use Policy Provides district
policies on internet use.
Hours of Operation: The media center is open Mondays-Fridays from 7:45
am—4:00 pm except on Wednesdays. The media center closes early on
Wednesdays due to faculty meetings. Students must have a pass from a
teacher in order to use the media center during the school day. Passes are
not required to use the media center before or after school.
Circulation Policy: Students may check out a maximum of four books at one
time for two weeks. Books may be renewed if no one else is asking for
them. Students are not allowed to check out videos/dvds, equipment,
reference books, current issues of magazines, or equipment. Fines are
accessed for any overdue books. Students are not allowed to check out
materials if they have overdue books or owe fines at either Southside or
another school.
- Faculty/staff are allowed to check out materials for the
entire school year.
- Fines: 10 cents every school day up to a maximum of
$5.00 per overdue item.
Media Center Use (individual students): Students are encouraged to use the media center.
Students must have a media center pass to use the media center during
school. They do not need a pass before or after school. Passes must be
written for assignments or research only. Passes should only be written by
the subject area teacher and should include the work to be accomplished.
SUBS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SEND STUDENTS TO THE MEDIA CENTER.
Food & Drink: Food products, drinks, and chewing
gum are not allowed in the media center.
Media Center Use (classes): Teachers may sign up their class to come to the media
center in the sign in notebook. At least 24 hours notice is required if a
teacher wants to bring their class to the media center. It is the
teacher’s responsibility to maintain class discipline in the media center.
If the class becomes too disruptive they will be expelled from the media
center. With prior approval from the media specialist, a teacher may send
five students to the media center at one time. The students must have a
pass with an assignment on it in order to use the media center. SUBS ARE
NOT ALLOWED TO BRING CLASSES TO THE MEDIA CENTER.
Substitutes: Substitutes are not allowed to either send students to
the media center or to bring classes to the media center.
Media Center Closings: Occasionally the media center will have to close because
of a conference, testing, meeting, etc. Advanced notice will be given when
the media center will be closed. When the media center is closed, only
media center aides and faculty will be allowed in the media center.
Computers: The media center is automated for both management and
circulation. Networked computers are available for faculty and students to
use for research and word processing. Access to the Internet and several
databases are available for use. Students must have a signed Internet
Permission Form (link to form) to use the Internet. All of the student
computers have Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher installed.

System) is the State's computer-based, career information delivery system,
providing essential data on careers, salaries, financial aid, education
and job opportunities--including military, apprenticeships,
post-secondary, trade and vocational programs.
Wilson General Science DatabaseDesigned for the undergraduate student and general
researcher, Wilson General Science databases allow searching of the
content of popular and professional English-language science periodicals,
as well as the science section of the New York Times.
These databases abstract 191 periodicals as far back as
1984. Full text of 57 periodicals as far back as 1993. PDF page images
from 2000 forward on WilsonWeb. Databases are updated
4 times a week.

Discus
This is a massive resource with
access to 12 different major databases. These include: LegalTrac, Business
and Company ASAP, Biography Resource Center, Expanded Academic ASAP,
InfoTrac, General Resource Center, etc.
Videos: Showing rented videos or personally-owned
videos is OK as long as the use of that video meets the following
criteria:
- The use of that video is documented in the lesson
plans showing how the video supports the goals and objectives of that
lesson.
- The video is a true and legal copy (you may not use
any video that has been dubbed from another video or taped from a
premium channel that you have to pay a subscription fee to receive.
- Some teaching and learning activities are associated
with the viewing of the video, ex. guided viewing sheets, written
analysis of the video, comparison to a book that's been read.
