3/8 This summer, the Daniels Center for Leadership and
Service at Converse College will host L3: Ladies Learning and Leading, a
summer program designed specifically for rising 10th grade young women who
want to build upon their natural leadership skills and commitment to
community service. L3 is a four-day residential program of leadership
development which emphasizes cooperative teamwork. L3 is open to motivated
young women who are rising high school sophomores. Tuition is $350 &
need-based scholarships are available. See Mr. Lundy in Guidance or go
on-line at www.converse.edu The application deadline is April 1.

2/28 Seniors: Another new scholarship: Zonta International offers a $1000
scholarship to a female who has demonstrated evidence of participation in a
public service project along with a good academic record
2/28 Seniors: New scholarships include: Robert David Scholarship for
children of American Legion members, Bowen Foundation for summer internships
in media stations, Through the Looking Glass Scholarship for seniors who
have parents with disabilities, the Simpson scholarship for Greenville
County graduate attending Greenville Tech, and the Business Education
scholarship for business majors at Greenville Tech. Please see Ms. King for
additional information.
2/10 Seniors: Here are two new scholarships: One is for children
or grandchildren of certain Marine Corps veterans. The other is for students
who have started their own business - the NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award.

American Legion Post # 3 is seeking nominations for the 2006 Palmetto
Boys State Encampment to be held June 11 - 17 on the campus of the
University of South Carolina. Southside High School will have the
opportunity to nominate two (2) rising seniors to participate in this most
worthwhile program. Palmetto Boys State has one primary objective: To take
young men who have demonstrated leadership in their own communities and
train them in practical, democratic principles of government.... If wish to
be considered for nomination please see Ms. Broadus in Guidance by Friday,
February 17th.
Seniors: The Rotary Club of Greenville is offering a scholarship based on
need, academic achievement, and community/school involvement. Please see Ms.
King for an application. Also, General Electric is offering a scholarship.
The criteria are financial need and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Please see Ms. King
for an application.
Beginning Jan. 31, you may come to guidance and receive an application
for the DONNETTA HAM MARTIN SERVICE AND SCHOLARSHIP MEMORIAL AWARD. The
deadline is April 3rd. Mrs. Martin passes away in 2004, but she taught in
the Greenville County School District for 25 plus years. Southside High
School was privileged to have her among its faculty for six years. We would
like for all interested seniors to make sure they take advantage of this
opportunity to apply.
Clemson University's Youth Learning Institute announces 4-H Expedition
2006, a fun-filled, 3 day/2 night outdoor weekend adventure for teens aged
14-16. Sunday, March 24 through Sunday, March 26. Participants will camp
overnight in the beautiful, biologically diverse Eastatoee River Valley in
Upstate, SC (one of the places in the upstate where our native Brook and
Rainbow Trout are making a last stand against Global Warming). Among the
activities will be hiking, fishing and "geocoaching" using handheld GPS
systems. Cost is $195 - $50 at the time of registration and the balance by
March 3. See your science teacher or Guidance for details.
Senior Scholar-Athletes, Are You Game?/Got Milk? If your answer is
resounding Yes! you can ask a teacher, coach or counselor to nominate you
for the USA Today 9th annual Scholar-Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award
Program (SAMMY). You can even nominate yourself. You could be one of 25
winners from high schools throughout the country to win a $7500 college
scholarship, an invitation to attend a SAMMY Disney World weekend this
summer, and an opportunity to be pictured in a USA Today Milk Mustache ad.
See you coach or Mr. Lundy in Guidance as soon as possible. Deadline for
nominations is March 3.
Students interested in government, current events, and speech and debate
may wish to explore the 2006 Junior Statesmen Summer School. Experience the
challenge and excitement of politics & meet and question the nations leading
politicians on the campus of a major east coast university. Admission is
competitive & partial scholarships based on financial need and academic
merit are available. If you are interested in being nominated please do not
delay in seeing Mr. Bynum in room 210 or Mr. Lundy in Guidance.
The Coast Guard Academy, The Naval Academy, and the Military Academy
(West Point) each have summer programs. The Coast Guard's Academy
Introduction Mission (AIM) is a week-long summer program for high school
juniors interested in serving their country and exploring technical degree
programs; The Naval Academy's Summer Seminar 2006 offers the opportunity for
juniors to visit the Naval Academy for one week in June. Students will
experience all aspects of the naval Academy; and the purpose of the
week-long Summer Leaders Seminar at West Point is to help all students gain
a better understanding of the academic opportunities at a service academy.

Seniors: Information on two new scholarships is available: One is at the
following web site: www.studentanthemproject.org. The other is the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority Scholarship for African-American female students with
at least a "C" average who demonstrate financial need. Please see Ms. King
for an application.
Seniors: Another new scholarship: The SC Association of Cooperative
Extension Secretaries offers a $500 scholarship to a student pursuing a
career in secretarial science, computer science, or business management. The
deadline is March 10. See Ms. King for an application.
Essay Contests: (1) High School Seniors who are planning to attend an
Historically Black College or University may enter the Alltel Black History
Month Words of Wisdom essay contest. In 600-800 words answer the following
question: "What Words of Wisdom will you pass on to those who come after
you?" Students interested in the Holocaust are reminded of two essay
contests (2) The 2006 Holocaust Remembrance National Essay Contest. Students
are asked to write an essay of no more than 1200 words analyzing why it is
vital that the remembrance, history and lessons of the Holocaust be passed
to a new generation.

Programs offered by colleges and universities in South Carolina: Claflin
College - Prism Program: "The Mission of the Prism Program is to increase
the number of scientists and mathematicians from low-income, potential first
generation college backgrounds; Clemson University - SAT Boot Camp & Career
Workshops II (Discover Clemson); Columbia College's Alliance for Women -
Emerging Leaders (for Freshmen), Lead 2006 (for sophomores & juniors), &
Lead 4 (for juniors & seniors); & Converse College - Young Writers Summer
Workshop. Registration deadlines, cost, & requirements vary. Please see Mr.
Lundy soon for details about these and other programs.
The 60th session of Palmetto Girls State is scheduled for June 11-17,
2006 at Columbia College in Columbia, SC. The American Legion Auxiliary is
looking for current Junior girls to be delegates. Interested students must
write a 150-200 word essay on the subject "Celebrate Freedom." In addition,
delegates must be willing to pledge allegiance to the American Flag and to
attend daily vespers services (devotional services). Current Junior Girls
who are interested in being recommended must submit their 150-200 word
essays to Ms. Broadus by Friday, February 17th. See Mr. Lundy in Guidance

J.E. SIRRINE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION are available now in the Guidance
Office. All applications must be postmarked April 15, 2006. Remember that to
apply for the Sirrine Scholarship a student must have taken the SAT or ACT
tests by January 28th, must complete a Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) form, and must submit an application for aid to the Financial
Aid Officer at the college

Oak Ridge National Laboratory Summer 2006 Math-Science-Technology
Institute - The Appalachian Regional Commission is collaborating with
the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge national Laboratory and the Oak
Ridge Institute for Science and Education to provide a two-week residential
hands-on learning institute focusing on math, science, and technology for
high school students and teachers from July 8 - July 21 2006. Students must
be at least 16 years old. High school teachers must plan to teach math,
science and/or technology for the 2006-2007. Applications must be received
by the South Carolina Department of Commerce no later than March 1, 2006,
and applications will be considered on a first come basis. See Mr. Lundy in
Guidance for details.

Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program *
Recognizing Excellence in High School Juniors $25,000 Honors the
all-around accomplishments of juniors in their community as well as school.
Does not consider test scores or financial need. Provides up to ten $25,000
national scholarships and up to 300 $2,500 scholarships. Scholarship may be
used at any type of post-secondary education or training in any certified
training program, trade and technical school, community college, two-or four
-year college or university. Junior with a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA for
the 9th and 10th grades who take the lead a, have experienced a significant
obstacle (s) and who are giving back to their communities. Juniors who think
they may qualify should go to

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program seeks nominees
- Time is short for submission of nomination materials: The deadline is
January 13, 2006! There are three components to the nomination process and
nomination forms are available at www.gmsp.org. Students are eligible to be
considered for a Gates Millennium Scholarship if they: (1) are African
American, American Indian , Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic
American (2) are a citizen/legal permanent resident of the United States (3)
have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) (4) have
demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community
service, extracurricular or other activities (5) will be enrolling for the
first-time at a U. C. accredited college or university as full-time,
degree-seeking first year student in the Fall of 2006 (6) meet the Federal
Pell Grant eligibility criteria (7) have all three required forms completed
and submitted by the January 13, 2006 deadline. The scholarship supports the
cost of attendance and can be renewed each year throughout the Scholars
undergraduate career. Also, the scholarship may even be renewed for those
scholars going on to graduate school in one of the following 6 majors -
education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or
science! Don't delay in getting your Nominee Personal Information,
Nominator, and Recommender forms and getting the process underway..
Harvard University announced that from now on
undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In
making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When
only 10 percent of the students in elite higher education come from families
in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We
are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of
the income distribution." If you know any one/family earning less than
$40,000/year with an honor student graduating from high school soon or near
ready for college, please pass this along. The prestigious university
announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families
can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student loans! To find out

The Four Chaplains Organization announces 3 scholarship
programs for Seniors: The Chapel of Four Chaplains 2006 Annual Essay
Contest, the 2006 National Art Contest, and the 2006 Annual Project Life
Saver. (1) Submit an essay of 450 words on the topic "How Can We Build
Bridges of Understanding through Commitment and Service to Humanity?" by
Monday November 28th. Awards are from $300 to $1000. Or (2) create an
original two dimensional artwork capturing the theme "Making the World a
Better Place Through Service and Sacrifice." The Deadline is December 9th
and awards are from $500 to $1000. Or (3) For Project Life Saver help
organize a team of 6 students and a faculty advisor to identify a problem or
need in the community, and create and conduct a new project to ameliorate
the problem or fulfill the need. The Deadline is December 12th and awards
are from $750 to $1000. See Mr. Lundy in Guidance for details.
October, 2005
The school-wide tutoring program, which is sponsored by GE, will offer two
$1,000 scholarships to seniors who utilize the program. SENIORS, YOU MUST
ATTEND TUTORING TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP. More details will follow in
November.
The Holocaust Remembrance Project is a national essay
contest for high school students. Students compete for an all-expense-paid
trip to Washington, D.C. and scholarships up to $10,000. Students responding
to the 2006 writing contest should study the Holocaust and then write an
essay of no more than 1,200 words. For the writing prompt, contest rules,
and details about prizes see your Social Studies teacher or Mr. Lundy in
Guidance.
