TIGER SPIRIT
December
Mrs. Helene Robinson, teacher of the SHS International
Baccalaureate class TOK (Theories of Knowledge), told the class about a Dr.
Shati Shah, who had written about her experiences with hurricane Katrina.
Mrs. Robinson shared the editorial with the class and said that Dr. Shah had
offered to come and speak to the students. They asked what they could do to
help. She suggested they adopt families for Christmas. The SHS
student-in-charge is Golsa Yazdy who is president of the Interact Club. Her
New Orleans contact is Melissa Wells with the Tuoro Infirmary Foundation
Adopt-A-Family Program. The SHS students adopted 14 families affected by
Hurricane Katrina. Turoro Infirmary is one of the largest employees in the
city of New Orleans. Through their employees and volunteers like the student
organizations of Southside High School, the Tuoro Infirmary Foundation, a
nonprofit organization, is hoping to save the city and work together to
rebuild. The following SHS groups and families each adopted a specific
family with 3 to 6 members: Interact Club, National Honor Society ( 2
families), TOK Class, Drama Club, Forensics, Red Cross Club, Tiger
Ambassadors, IB Parents Council, Ms. Wall's 6th Period French Class, Student
Council, ROTC, French Club, and the Yazdy Family.
