April, 2006
Congratulations to the Winners of the Southside Gallery
Exhibition. 11 Students entered 15 pieces of artwork in the school-wide show
which was held Monday Night in conjunction with the PTSA meeting. Honorable
mentions went to Tarsis P. Martins for her Pastel Drawing entitled Rooting
and Denise Waltz for her Charcoal drawing Untitled. Third place went to an
Untitled acrylic painting by Elisa Justus. Second Place went to Mother and
Child a pencil drawing by Amber Coleman and First Place went to the Pencil,
Colored Pencil and Charcoal drawing entitled Union; Creation of Existence by
Gerard Coleman.
Congratulations to Southside's newest Clemson Emerging
Scholars! Amber Coleman, Kaneshia Johnson, Myia Lindsey, De'Chane Mayo,
Miesha Thompson, Theasha McCullough, Ashley Montgomery and Stephanie
Sullivan.
Congratulations to the nine Southside High Students whose
work is included in the 16th annual Upstate High School Art Exhibition. The
exhibition, which features artwork from High School students in 17 upstate
school districts features work by the following SHS students: Lamar
Alexander, Gerard Coleman, Keyanna Garrison, Keara Holland, Elisa Justus,
Jason Ryan, DeTraviez Scott, Jessica Sibert and Denise Waltz. Their work is
currently on display at the Greenville Technical College Greer Campus.

Congratulations to Chasney Johnson who was awarded the Governor's Award
of the National Technical Honor Society for which honor over 600 people were
nominated. Chasney, a second year nursing student at Donaldson, will be
honored at a luncheon with Governor Sanford during the first week in May,

Southside High School's Theory of Knowledge Class and Gospel Choir
presented "Black Heritage Retrospective: From the Civil Rights Movement of
the 1960's to the Challenges of the 21st Century" during assembly programs
March 6, 2006. The well-received drama was directed by Samantha Moorhead and
scripted by Kriska Carandang and Tarsis Martins. Tre Robinson diected the
choir and Douglass Gamble was sound producer. Swandia Adams introduced the
retrospective. Forensic coach Erickson Bynum gave dramatic readings from
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail". The TOK students
dramatized three scenes from the 1960's interspersed with "We Shall
Overcome" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing by the Gospel Choir. Alicia
Williams addressed "How Far Have We Come?" and Meg Turlington spoke on "
What Challenges Remain?"

Congratulations to Megan Tone ,
Southside's Governor's Citizenship Award winner for 2006. Selection is based
on the qualities of Service, Leadership, Responsibility, Character, and
Discipline.
Congratulations to Samantha Jaeger who was the only
college-bound student in South Carolina and one of 23 in the U. S., to
achieve a 36, the highest possible composite score, on the December 2005
ACT.

Congratulations to the 2005 Reflections Competition School
winners. Denise Waltz won first place in the Visual Arts category with her
piece "Untitled." Nathaniel Powers won first place in the Photography
category for his photo "Changing Lanes," and Jasmine Dames took first place
in the Literature category for her piece entitled "I Wonder Why" These
contestants will go on to the Greenville County district competition in
December. Second place in the Visual Arts category went to Sasha Williams
for her drawing entitled "Nature's Rebirth." In the Photography Category
Nathaniel Powers took second and third place as well for his pieces titled
"Petrified Dragon" and "Hill of 1,000 Terraces" respectively.
Congratulations again to our winners as well as all of those who
participated. These works of art will be on display later this week through

International Festival
Bienvenidos! Bienvenue! Wilkommen!
A Celebration of Cultures, a night dedicated to celebrating the rich
diversity of our Southside family took place at SHS last night. Students
displayed projects from foreign language, social studies, art, math, and
science classes with international themes. Video projects and slide shows
featured in-depth projects and student trips to Germany, France, and the
Netherlands. Hundreds of students and family members participated in the
international family dinner. Featured in the Festival Live Performances were
Disha Upadhyaya, Shruti Mittal, Maheen Akter, Bhavik Veer, Meenal Patel,
Rishi Pandya, Kaushal and Andy Patel in "Desai Revolution;" Kelly Funderburk

"Minuet" by Johann Sebastian Bach; Cornesia Jefferson and Lamar Webb in "Simboya,"

the Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District, as a delegate to
the Carolina Coastal Adventure at Somerset Facility on Lake Moultrie.
Congratulations to Stefanie Stieb who is being

September, 2005 Congratulations to Chisom Ezenekwe,
senior, who has been selected as a semifinalist in the National Achievement
Scholarship Program. Chisom scored in the top 5 percent of Black Americans
who took the 2004 SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PST/NMSQT). Congratulations to Stephanie Hoo and Samantha
Yeager who have been named 2006 National Merit Semi-Finalists.

Mrs. Karen Owens, English teacher, who has been selected for the third
time to Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She was nominated this
time by Palak Shah who graduated in 2004. Her biography will be published in
the 9th edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers in September. |
