May, 2006
– Unit SC-955 at Southside High School has been
selected as one of 267 units to receive the 2005-2006 Air Force Junior ROTC
Distinguished Unit Award. This is the fourth consecutive award for this
distinguished unit. This award recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that
have performed above and beyond normal expectations, and that have
distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and
community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing
better citizens for America.
The objectives of the Junior ROTC
program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life
skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and
self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in
air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people who are
in the 9th grade or higher, physically fit, and are citizens or nationals of
the United States.
Air Force Junior ROTC is located in
746 high schools across the United States and at selected schools in Europe,
in the Pacific and Puerto Rico. Junior ROTC enrollment includes more than
104,000 cadets.
March, 2006
Congratulations! The Southside AFJROTC drill team
participated in the 2006 Flying Gamecock Invitational State Drill Meet March
3, 2006. The team placed third in Fancy Flight without Arms, Fancy Element
with Arms, and second in Fancy Flight with Arms, all commanded by Tre
Robinson. With Margarita Rodriguez commanding, the team took first place in
"Knock Out."
November, 2005
Congratulations! The AFJROTC drill team participated in the
5th Annual Jack Frost Drill Meet at JL Mann High School this weekend along
with 21 other teams and came away with a 2nd Place Overall Trophy! Out of 12
events, the team placed in 9. The team placed first in the following events:
Fancy Element without Arms commanded by Margarita Rodriguez ; Fancy Flight
without and with Arms commanded both by Tre Robinson; The team placed second
in the following events: Regulation Flight with Arms commanded by Tre
Robinson ; Regulation Element with Arms commanded by Nelson Weston; Fancy
Element with Arms commanded by Margarita Rodriguez; Porsche Jenkins place
third in Regulation Individual Arms ; Mauricio Alvarenga and Dezmond
Bonaparte finished third in Fancy Duet ; Completing the exceptional weekend
Navario Blakely and Tre Robinson finished first in “Knockout” Armed and
without Arms respectively. Both beat out approximately 50 other cadets to
win!
October, 2005
CONGRATULATIONS to the Southside Air Force JROTC Drilling Tigers for
their Overall Fourth Place Win this past Saturday at the Southeastern Drill
Competition at Donaldson Center. Southside competed against 24 schools from
the southeast. In addition to being the overall fourth place winner, they
placed in the following events:
First Place in Flight Regulation Unarmed commanded by Porsche Jenkins;
First Place in Element Exhibition commanded by Natalie Conrad; Second Place
in Element Regulation commanded by Mauricio Alvarenga; Second Place in
Flight Regulation commanded by Tre Robinson; Second Place in Flight
Exhibition commanded by Margarita Rodriguez; Fourth Place in Color Guard
commanded by Chelsea Thompson. Congratulations to our Southside Tigers!

The “Drilling Tigers” departed this Saturday for the 2005 Carolina’s
Military Drill Championship in Asheville, North Carolina to defend their
title as Air Force champion.
To bring the trophy home, they needed to do well in most of their events.
All the cadets performed well but one team stood out from the rest and
placed 2nd in the Element Unarmed event. This team was commanded by Natalie
Conrad and consisted of Dezmond Bonaparte, Dana Brown, Ashley Grimsley,
Avery Holland, Monique Johnson, and James Litzie.
When the “Drilling Tigers” returned, they brought the trophy back
Southside. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN “DRILLING TIGERS” for being the 2005
Military Service Champion for the Air Force

Southside High School's Corps of Cadets has
been selected as one of the top units in the United States. For the third
consecutive year, the Corps has received the Distinguished Unit Award.
Previously, they have also received the Air Force Junior JROTC Unit
Excellence Award.
Additionally, during the month of June, a
group of 15 SHS's students attended a seven-day cadet leadership school at
Mercer University in Macon, GA. Four cadets received special recognition for
their achievements. Cadet Porche Jenkins received the distinction of not
only stepping in as the Cadet Camp Commander, but also received one of the
three Outstanding Leadership Awards. Cadet Valerie Narvaez received the
outstanding Basic Award, Cadet Margarita Rodriguez received the Outstanding
Flight Cadre Award, and Cadet Latoya Wheeler received the Best in Regulation
Drill Award. Cadets Cherie Green, Dana Brown, Valerie Narvaez and
Caleb Mathis were members of the flight that received the camp's Outstanding
Flight Award.
