Davaris McGowens scored 34 points,
and top-ranked Eastside rallied in
the fourth quarter and hung on for a
pulsating, 75-74 victory over
Southside on Tuesday night.

musical instrument? Or do you enjoy dance and
movement? If so, then we would like to invite you
to join the 2012-2013 Southside High School Band!
Membership Packets are available on Ms. Cloughly's
Teacher Website. If you are interested in playing a
woodwind or brass instrument, simply return the
Membership Packet to the Band Room no later than
Friday, March 9th.
If you are interested in Color Guard, please attend
the Color Guard Interest Meeting on Thursday,
February 23rd in the Band Room at 4:15pm. Bring
your completed Membership Packet to the meeting.

Congratulations to the AJROTC:
Congratulations to the AJROTC Drilling Tigers for
their 2nd place finish in Demilitarized Division at
the American Legion/Coca-Cola National Championships
in Montgomery, AL. The team competed against 35
schools and 41 teams representing 6 states!
Summer Opportunities for
SHS Students:
Claflin University Upward Bound Math and Science
Program is recruiting participants for the 2012
summer academic program. Students who are interested
in pursing careers related to science and
mathematics are encouraged to apply.. This is
opportunity is open to first generation college
students in grades 9-11. Please see Ms. Henderson in
Guidance for more information.
Emerging Public Leaders through Furman University
is currently accepting applications for the 2012
summer program. The program is free of charge to
rising seniors who want to get involved and make a
difference in the world. Interested students should
contact Dr. Brooke Culclasure at brooke.culclasure@furman.edu
or 864-294-3546 at the Riley Institute for more
information.
The
Darla Moore School of Business at the University of
South Carolina is pleased to announce the
acceptance of applicants for the 2012 summer
program. This is an all expense paid one-week
residency program designed to introduce high
achieving current juniors/rising senior minority
students to the study of business through a tailored
curriculum. Interested students should see Ms.
Henderson in Guidance for an application.
The
University of South Carolina Upstate and BMW
Manufacturing in Greer are once again teaming up
for the USC Upstate/BMW Manufacturing Academic
Outreach Camp to introduce students to exciting and
real world applications of mathematics, statistics,
and physics. The camp will emphasize how mathematics
and science are used to improve the processes to
build things like BMW vehicles. Students must be
rising seniors at the time of the application and
must apply online at www.uscupstate.edu/bmwcamp

Online Student Registration for students
currently in grades 5-11 will take place
February 13 – March 16. Parents and
students are advised to seek information
from their schools as to when specific grade
levels will register and other important
information related to a successful
registration. Prior to registration, schools
will post the course catalog on the school
website so that parents may see what courses
will be offered by their school for the next
school year. Parents without Internet access
at home may request a printed copy of the
course catalog.

Penny Drive to Support SC Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society:
JROTC has joined forces with the SC Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society again this year in
their Pennies Campaign Drive during the
month of February. This is a School and
Youth Program designed to raise money for,
and raise awareness of, the most common
cancer in children under 20 years old. Each
year millions of students, nationwide, come
together to further the cause of finding
cures for blood cancers.
Along with raising money in their respective
classrooms, our cadets will be hosting a
walk-a-thon during the month of February.
Please see Sgt. Gause or Sgt. Hodge to buy
your jeans pass. Please help our cadets
support this worthy cause.

Nominations:
The PTSA Nominating Committee is now
accepting nominations for the positions of
President, Treasurer, VP Ways and Means and
VP Volunteers for the 2012/2013 year.
Nomination forms and position descriptions
may be found on the PTSA page of the school
website and in the front office at the
school. All nominations should be placed in
the PTSA box in the front office by March 1
and people may self nominate.
