The PSAT will be administered at Southside to current sophomores on October 15th. Juniors that are planning to attend a 4-year college should plan to take the PSAT at a cost of $14.00. The PSAT is a great practice tool for anyone planning to take the SAT or ACT. The PSAT also allows students to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students must take the PSAT their junior year to enter the competition. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high schools students for recognition and college scholarships. The fee for juniors is $14.00, and the registration deadline is noon on October 3rd.

College Essay Writing Workshop
Southside High School in conjunction with the IB Parent Council will offer a FREE College Essay Writing Workshop for Juniors and Seniors on Thursday, September 25, at 4 p.m. in the school’s media center. The Workshop will be conducted by Dr. Savita Nair (Furman University) & Dr. Carol Wilson (Wofford College). The workshop will focus on helping students develop strategies and offer tips on how to effectively compose a college application essay.

20 GCS Seniors Named Semifinalist in National Merit Program
Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced today that 20 Greenville County Schools’ seniors are among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

SHS Forensics News
Congratulations to the SHS Forensic Team on an OUTSTANDING showing at the 2014 NSDA National Speech and Debate Tournament. The team finished the week long competition earning a SCHOOL OF HONOR in SPEECH AWARD as well multiple students advancing past the preliminary rounds. A special salute goes to Branden Lindsay and Jarrett Williams for advancing to the final round of Duo Interpretation. Not only did Branden and Jarrett reach the final round, but in a head to head competition among the other five teams to advanced, these talented young men earned the status of NATIONAL FINAL ROUND CHAMPIONS. They are also the FIRST duo in South Carolina speech and debate history to accomplish this feat. Another special salute goes to Abrianna Means for advancing to the final session of Congressional Debate - House Chamber. Abrianna was the ONLY African American student and one of only FIVE young ladies selected to participate in the final round. Click HERE for complete results.
