International Festival 2015
SHS International Festival will be held Monday November 23, 2015. Please plan to attend and enjoy delicious and unique foods along with fantastic student performances. Doors open at 5:00 for food drop off. Dinner is from 6:00-7:00 and the Performance begins at 7:00. Admission: A dish of food for each 1-2 people you want to attend and 2.00 per person (5 and under free). If you wish to have a specialty cooking station during the event please call Ms. K. Copeland at 355-8768 and leave a message with your name and phone number.
Speech and Debate News
Congratulations to the SHS Speech and Debate Team on a fantastic showing at the 2015 Asheville HS Cougar Classic Invitational Tournament. Out of 32 schools in the competition and one of our smaller delegations in attendance, the team finished in 2nd place overall. Special salutes go out to senior, Isabelle Doan (expository), juniors, Hasna Karim (impromptu) and Jordan Redd as well as his duo partner, freshman, Kobe Watts for winning first place in their respective categories. AFJROTC had another outstanding weekend. The Drilling Tigers came in second place overall at the Clemson Tigers drill meet this weekend competing against teams from S.C., N.C. and GA. The commanders were: Cadets O’Corye A., McKenzie M., Kenisha R., Dmitri S., Brinton G., and Jasmine M. Congratulations to them for their outstanding leadership.

SC Governor's School Opportunity
Attention all 9th & 10th grade students interested in Creative Writing, Ballet, Acting, Music, and Visual Arts! A representative from the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities in Greenville will be on campus to talk about their summer and residential programs on Wednesday, November 18th from 11:35-1:00. If you are interested in learning about programs that provide pre-professional training in your art area, then be sure to stop by their table at lunch!
MedEx Program Opportunities
MedEx is a comprehensive program hosted by Greenville Health System that caters to students interested in healthcare as a career field. This internship explores different career options available and puts students in contact with those willing to help them achieve their goals. Youth Leadership Greenville Program
Current sophomores are encouraged to apply to the Youth Leadership Greenville (YLG) program, sponsored by the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. This program is modeled after Leadership Greenville, which has a 42-year history of igniting a commitment to community service in leaders throughout the Upstate. Developing our youth to serve in leadership capacities is key to the future success of our community, and this program is designed to identify potential leaders and challenge those youth to become engaged citizens. National Merit Scholars Semifinalist 2015
Congratulations to seven SHS students for qualifying as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These talented students will compete for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth about $32 million. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring. Southside students were: Vaibhav Bafna, Kathleen Beaudoin, Nathaniel Boen, Ellen Chen, Emily Chen, Anna Hardison and Lillian MengThese academically talented students will compete for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth about $32 million. Orange Express Marching Band
Congratulations to the SHS Orange Express Marching Band! They took 8th place at the State Finals. This is the band's first appearance at the State Finals.
Emerging Public Leaders (EPL) program is an exciting nine-month service-oriented leadership experience open to rising high school seniors. It begins with a summer program on Furman's campus (June 19-24, 2016), in which students will learn to lead in diverse settings, engage in the community, analyze critical issues, lead ethically, communicate effectively, and plan a service project to be undertaken in their home communities. The GE Volunteers will once again offer after school tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:00 p.m. in the Media Center beginning Tuesday, September 29. Students will receive one-on-one academic assistance in the core subjects. Teachers are asked to make recommendations based on 1st quarter progress report. Recommendations forms are due September 25th.
