Knights Defeating Hunger

On November 5 from 8:15-9:00 students will be attending an informational assembly on our team’s service learning project. Parents are invited to attend to learn more about this community project.

In association with Greer Relief and Hands on Greenville, our team of students will be collecting food items to create individual boxes for families in need. Greer Relief has identified that the time period after the holidays is when their food pantry is most depleted and in need of more contributions. Because of this, our students will be bringing in food through January 16 and will personally be making the boxes to give to Greer Relief and the families they service.

Our goal is for each student to create at least one box for a family of 1-2 people. In order to accomplish this, students should try to bring in between 14 and 22 items. The best thing is that students do not necessarily have to go and purchase the requested items. We are hoping that they can take this project one step further by organizing drives in their communities, churches, etc. The impact that we are trying to deliver to the students is that they can be leaders and make a difference in their communities. We want the students to understand that they themselves can be the organizers. For example, a student can go to their church and run a food drive for a week or two and bring in those items as their contribution to Greer Relief. In this way, one individual student has brought in more people from the community, so their individual contribution is actually on behalf of many others.

Our service project involves multiple steps in order for it to be successful.

Step 1:  Students will attend an informational assembly hosted by Greer Relief on Nov. 5.

Step 2:  Review the attached wish list for what students should bring from November 5—January 16. Students can bring as many items as they want.

Step 3:  On January 20, the RMS cafeteria will be converted into a mock food bank. Students will draw upon all of the items brought in and create boxes for families. Students will then take their created boxes and load them onto the Greer Relief truck to be delivered.

Rewards will be given to the homeroom that donates the most items as well as an individual reward for the student who brings the most items.
