Television to VCR Hookup
using
Audio-Video Cables

Special Note: Color-coding of the cables serves only to assist the user in keeping cables straight. Cables with various color-coding or without color-coding will work fine.
Special Note: On some older VCR's one or more of these video or audio outputs may be a plug type called a BNC plug. These plugs require a different cable end but are connected in the same manner. For the cable or an adapter to use with the normal video/audio cable, contact your Media Specialist or Technology Coordinator. Either the cable or adapter can be purchased at most local electronics stores such as Radio Shack.
1. On the VCR you will find an RCA plug (usually color-coded yellow) disignated as "video out".

2. At the same location, you will find RCA plugs designated as "audio out". They will typially be color-coded with red or white. Stereo VCRs will have a set of these plugs with one each for red and white. When two are available they will also be labeled L(eft) and R(ight).

3. On the television will be the same arrangement except the label will indicate "video in" and "audio in". Televisions could have two sets of these plugs with one set at the front of the television. tvbackS.jpg (125716 bytes)
4. Using standard RCA cables (often called dubbing cables) attach one cable to the video out of the VCR and to the video in of the television.

5. Repeat this step for each audio set.

6. With all cables make sure to always attach to like plugs (red to red, etc.) on both pieces of equipment.

7. If one of the two devices has only one audio plug and the other two, check to see if the device with two plugs designates one of the audio plugs as mono. If so, use this plug, otherwise match colors, red to red or white to white. Do not attach the other cable.
8. Set the television to the video or auxillary (AUX) channel. On televisions with two sets of inputs two video (auxillary) channels will be available. Select the one that has been used to connect the VCR in steps 1 and 2 above.
9. Setting the television to the video (auxillary) channel is usually accomplished by moving the channel control to below channel 2. The television will cycle through channel 2 then to the video channels and move to the highest channel.
10. Most televisions require this channel to be activated in the televsion set-up. Use the television manual to do this. It will only need to be done once. If you have trouble contact your Media Specialist, Technology Coordinator, or Technology Teacher Leader for assistance.
11. No special settings should be necessary on the VCR. Insert the tape and press play.
