6th Grade
Art is a class for both students who are skilled in art and students who
believe they have no "talent." Students in this class learn a wide
variety of techniques and methods: from drawing portraits to painting
landscapes; from creating pottery to learning about famous artists and
their techniques.
Band and Strings may
be selected by students who have an interest
in instrumental music and who furnish their own instruments.
Sixth grade students who don't take band or strings will
take General
Music.
General Music students use instruments, dance, and
movement to
explore their musical interests and abilities.
Music is a semester-long course taken with Physical
Education all year and Art one semester.
7th and 8th Grade Only
Chorus - by
auditions. Students learn technical aspects of singing as
well as experience various styles of music through singing. The chorus
performs several times during the year. Attendance is required at
performances (including evening performances) as part of their academic
grade.
Computer Keyboarding - Students are taught the touch-typing method
for keying alphanumeric information. The District Keyboarding Exam is
given the first week in May at HMS. Before graduating from high school,
all students must be declared keyboard proficient.
Web Publishing - by
application only. Students learn technical aspects of
drawing, painting, design, and ceramics; they also experience various
styles of artistic expression through guest speakers and field trips. All
student work is
published to the internet, on the student's personal home page. This
is a year-long class, meeting every other day.
All Grades
Physical Education - Students attend class
in Physical Education
every other day. They are required to dress out in appropriate clothing
and to participate in a balanced program of activities. Appropriate
clothing consists of shorts or warm-ups, lightweight shirt, athletic
shoes (non-cleated), and socks. Uniforms are available for purchase
through the school.
