Greenville County Middle School Mathematics Programs Course Descriptions
Pre-Algebra I
This standards-based course is designed
to help sixth-grade students make the transition from arithmetic to algebraic
thinking. It begins with a review and extension of decimal and fraction concepts and
operations and ends with integer concepts and operations. The course includes other
important topics in mathematics including patterns, functions, geometry, measurement,
probability, and statistics. There is an emphasis on making connections through
problem solving. The course provides remediation for students who are below grade
level as well as enrichment and extension for advanced students. Textbook:
Glencoe: Course 1 with Course II as a resource.
Pre-Algebra II
The emphasis in this standards-based
seventh-grade course is on the development and understanding of the real number system and
on algebraic thinking. Students acquire skills such as adding, subtracting,
multiplying, and dividing signed numbers including integers. Students solve
multi-step equations involving real numbers. Problem solving in the course includes
consumer applications of ratio, proportion, and percent. It continues to develop
other important mathematics topics including patterns, functions, geometry, measurement,
probability, and statistics. It provides remediation for students who are below
grade level as well as enrichment for advanced students. Students who achieve at a
high level in this course will be recommended for Algebra I in Grade 8. Textbook:
Glencoe: Course 3 with Course II as a resource.
Pre-Algebra III
This standards-based course is similar
in content to Pre-Algebra II. It gives students who are not quite ready for Algebra
I in Grade 8 the opportunity to become fully prepared by Grade 9. This course
extends students understanding of the real number system, ratio, proportion, and percent,
as well as patterns, functions, geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics.
The course continues to provide remediation for students who are below grade level.
There is a strong emphasis on applications of mathematics concepts and skills to
real-world situation. Textbook: Prentice-Hall: Course 3.
Algebra 1
This high-school level course is based
on South Carolina Curriculum Standards for Algebra I and is the same for both middles and
high school. Students who complete Pre-Algebra II at a high level of achievement
will take Algebra I in the eighth grade for a high school unit. Students who work
successfully in this course, whether in the eighth grade or the ninth grade, will be
prepared for the state end-of-course test. At the end of the year, students who
achieve at a high level and who meet clearly defined criteria will receive honors credit
for the course. These students will be recommended for Honors Geometry the following
year. Other students will be recommended for College Preparatory Geometry. Textbook:
Heath: Algebra I.
