Grant For
Student Newspaper

Mrs. Henry’s fifth grade class is enjoying writing their own newspaper. Their paper is published every other month. Their goal is to publish once a month beginning in March. The students decide what articles to publish and graphics to use. The interviews and articles are conducted and written by the students. Mrs. Henry’s students began Thunder Kids News during the 2004-2005 school year. The class won an Alliance Grant this year to continue publishing their newspaper. -- Mrs. Henry, 5th Grade Teacher

THUNDER KIDS NEWS

Famous Inventors

Some famous inventors are hanging outside our door. We traced each other on construction paper. Then we wrote some amazing things about them. It took us almost forty-five minutes.  We had a lot of fun.

Who invented the light bulb?

Pirates

Cherrydale has a pirate. Her name is Mrs. King. She has sailed the Atlantic Ocean four times. She has never made anyone walk the plank, but she is about to make someone walk it and that person is Mrs. Henry. Mrs. Henry hunts pirates and Pirate King does not want to get caught. She hides her treasures in her big swimming hole. For Thanksgiving, pirates like to read and eat shrimp from the ocean without cooking it. Well, that’s the tale of Pirate King!

Book Character Parade

We had a lot fun at the Book Character Parade. Everybody dressed up as book characters.  Mrs. Henry dressed as Laura Ingalls.  Her favorite book is Little House on the Prairie.  Some of our classmates dressed as a teacher, and another as a doctor. Congratulations to Lorenza for winning third place.

Red Ribbon Parade

At the parade we cheered and represented our school.  We felt shy in front of all those people. The crowd was so loud and crowded .There was so many different schools there. The schools danced and showed many talents. We were mad, because we didn’t get to stay!!!

Tall Tales

We promised you more and here they are!

The Goose

By: Luis Acevedo

Once upon a time there was an ugly house where a funny goose lived. Nobody knew that a little goose lived in the house. One day the little goose said, “I have powers, I am funny, I am little, but I am not scared.” The goose went to his friend’s house to play a joke on him. He transformed his friend into a frog. The goose said, “Sorry” and his friend said, “Can I live with you?” The goose said yes and they lived happily ever after in the ugly house.

One day my brother and I were playing the Game Cube when my friends came to my house to play. My brother and I went outside to play basketball with them. On our way outside we did a back flip off the porch.

Then we did ten back flips to the road. We played basketball. My team had the ball in the middle, when I began doing back flips to duck the goal. Then I jumped right over the top of the goal to win the game.

Merry Christmas!!!!

Thunder Subjects

By: The Thunder Kids

Math: We are working on dividing. Some think it is very frustrating and some think it is easy.

Social Studies: We are doing a play on how kids worked very hard. We are learning about working conditions and reforms during the Industrial Revolution.

Writing: The whole school is entering a contest on Lt. Government’s Writing Award for Excellence. Mrs. Henry is killing us about the writing.

Science: In science we are learning about solvents and solutes. It will make your head spin!
