Media Center Schedule

Flexible Scheduling

In support of Greenville County’s goal of flexible access and flexible scheduling in all Greenville County School Media Centers, Cherrydale’s library media center (LMC) will operate on a fixed / flexible schedule this year.  This will allow all our students, staff and parents access to our LMC resources and media specialist throughout the school day.  Second thru fifth grade students, either individually or in small groups, may come daily to check out books or do research turning every school day into their “library day.”   Kindergarten and 1st grade classes will have a fixed library time during the first semester.  This will allow our younger students time to become familiar with the media center personal and procedures and develop an appreciation for books before coming to the media center individually or in small groups during the second semester.  Classes for all grades will be scheduled into the library media center when use of the LMC resources fits into the teachers’ lessons and may be scheduled for more that one day at a time.

Learning and Development  Goals

Library Media Center Objectives

With increased access to our Media Center resources, flexible scheduling will help our students:

  • by providing greater quantity of reading materials for our students.

  • by fostering independent use of our LMC with successful, enjoyable LMC experiences.

  • by offering time to explore areas of interest.

  • to learn and practice Information Literacy Skills for Student Learning when they are most relevant.

  • to learn and master research processes.

With increased access to our Media Center resources, flexible scheduling will help our teachers:

  • by promoting collaboration with the library media specialist in planning and conducting lessons integrating Information Literacy Skills for Student Learning  and SC Standards into their classroom curriculum.

  • by grasping “the teachable moment” for farther research.

  • by promoting research skills in their students.

Flexible scheduling will give the media specialists:

  •  the ability to develop a closer partnerships with teachers and students.

  • the ability to work individually with students, small groups, and teachers.

  •  the ability to teach Information Literacy Skills and research skills when it is relevant (not in isolation).

  • the ability to built a LMC collection that is more closely related to the needs of the students, teachers and classroom curriculum.

Learning experiences in the media center will be:

  • developed in collaboration with classroom teachers,

  • will be designed to encourage reading for enjoyment and to help develop skills for obtaining information from print, non-print media and technology sources,

  • will be integrated with IInformation Literacy Skills for Student Learning  and South Carolina Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math grade level standards.

Long Range Plans for the Elementary Library Media Center

Media specialist will meet with each grade level monthly and teachers, individually or in small groups,

  • to collaborate on lessons which incorporate Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning and SC Standards into all areas of their classroom curriculum and to develop students’ research skills,
  • to best determine when to schedule their classes into the Media Center schedule for those lessons,

Instruction of Students in the Media Center
Individual or Small Groups:
Students can be sent to the media center individually or in small groups of 5 or less.  Students should bring their behavior cards to the LMC and place them in the behavior card basket on the check out desk as soon as they enter the LMC.  A student’s behavior card will be the how we inform a his/her teacher about his/her behavior in the LMC.  Also in case of a fire drill, tornado drill, or evacuation of the building, the behavior cards will act as a roll for demanding the accountable of all students.   The teacher should also send a media center pass listing the names of the students, the activity or activities that they are to complete, and the time that they should return to the classroom.  The behavior cards must be signed by the media specialist or media assistant before the students leave the LMC.  The media center pass will be kept by the media center personnel to use in compiling LMC statistics.  Assistance will be given to students as needed to help them complete the assigned activity.
Large Group Instruction:  Classes for all grades will be scheduled into the library media center when use of the LMC resources fits into the teachers’ lessons and may be scheduled for more that one day at a time.  Collaborative planning between the Media Specialist and teachers provides opportunities for integrating media resources, Information Literacy Skills, and technology within each grade level curriculum.  The media center schedule is kept in a notebook at the check-out desk for the upcoming 3 weeks.  Teachers should collaborate with the media specialist at least a week before signing up.  Lessons on using the library media center’s materials and resources will be taught collaboratively with the teacher to a class through powerpoints, modeling, lecture, and assisting the students to use the materials and resources to complete worksheets or tasks.

The time that the unit or lesson is taught will depend on when it best fit into the classroom curriculum.
