Third-Fifth graders participated in the Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars program. One hundred and thirty students from Oakview participated in the reading promotion and were recognized on the field at a Greenville Drive game on April 15th. Click here to see a slideshow of the evening. |

Jan Brett Visits Oakview! |

After winning an international Facebook contest in 2013, Oakview students, parents, teachers, and staff were treated to a full day with award-winning illustrator and author, Jan Brett! She held two morning asssemblies and five grade level meet and greets before signing a select number of books in the afternoon for excited students! That evening, Jan Brett and her husband, Joe, joined our Oakview families at the Upcountry History Museum for a dessert reception in her honor. Click the links below to see more of her visit. Spring Sing |

Six Oakview students participated in Spring Sing on April 1st at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville. This is an auditioned group of over 300 fifth grade students from all over the district. They participated in weekend rehearsals and worked with a clinician from Newberry College. These students did a great job representing Oakview. We are so proud of them! The concert was a wonderful evening of music! Click here to view the performance on our District YouTube page. Food Drive |

Student Council has been overwhelmed by the response to our food drive this year. You donated over 10,000 cans! Student Council members visited the food bank to deliver the food. Their shelves were pretty barren. The staff was so very grateful for our donation. The director shared with us that we brought enough food to feed 5,000 people for a week. That is enough food for 35,000 meals! Thank you for making this possible! Rotary Club Donation |

Oakview received a generous donation of dictionaries from the Rotary Club in Simpsonville. Each third grade student received a copy. |
Oakview Teacher Recognized in Upstate Publication |

First grade teacher, Kasia Szymanska, was recently featured in the January issue of Upstate Parent as one of 10 Educators Who Make a Difference. See pages 5, 11, and 28. She received an award on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at McAlister Square. The presentation was made by representatives from Upstate Parent magazine and Papa John's of the Upstate, and emceed by 103.3 Earth FM radio. Congratulations, Kasia! |

Zy Brown enjoyed being Principal for the day on Wednesday, January 15th! After winning the Hootenanny raffle for the job, he appeared on the morning news, visited teachers and classrooms, ate lunch at the principal's table, and gave students extra recess. |

Oakview Elementary Assistant Principal Terri Wheeler-Hawkins has been named Assistant Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators. Wheeler-Hawkins will now compete for national honors in the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Foundation Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year Program. Oakview's Chorus entertained K5-5th graders with an upbeat holiday concert that included DRUM club, Mallet Mania, Sign Language club, a select group of 4th grade recorder players, and Mrs. Bradt's Boomwhackers. The students worked very hard and did a great job on their performance. It was enjoyed by all! |
Girls on the Run |

Twenty-seven Oakview students participated in Girls on the Run (GOTR) of the Greenville Health System’s Children’s Hospital. This program is for girls age 8-11 years old. The goals of the program are to empower young girls to have a strong sense of identity, stand up for themselves, have a healthy body image, complete a community service project, and finish a 5K run/walk. The culminating run was the Furman Flatlander 5K on Saturday, December 7, 2013. For the community service project, the girls chose to make blankets for Safe Harbor (women's shelter) and donated them on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. |

Watch D.O.G.S. | |

Oakview Dads, Uncles, Adult Brothers, and Family Men were all invited to a Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) kickoff. The response was overwhelming with approximately 550 men, children, and volunteers attending. The goal of the program is to have a dad volunteer at school one full day during the year. After the kick off, the calendar quickly filled up with dads committing dates through December and beyond.
