Update Tuesday 2:30pm: The GCS ICE Team is working with District maintenance crews and the Department of Transportation to address problem areas on many of the 11,000 roads throughout Greenville County. Our team has identified many large patches of ice, particularly in shady areas or under overpasses. Such concerns exist in various areas around the county, including some south of I-85. A few areas with significant ice buildup have required multiple treatments of ice melt and the use of snow plow implements and are still not fully resolved.

Jan 10 - Today our ICE team checked hundreds roads over 800 square miles in Greenville County and found widespread patches of ice.  Unlike last year where we were able to cancel bus transportation to specific schools, today we could not isolate the  problem spots to one or two geographic areas.  We also saw numerous areas of runoff that will refreeze with temperatures in the mid-twenties Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has again issued a black ice advisory until noon tomorrow saying, “WHILE CONDITIONS ON MOST INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AND MANY MAIN ROADS HAVE IMPROVED...MANY SECONDARY ROADS AND SIDE STREETS REMAIN SNOW AND ICE COVERED. EVEN IN LOCATIONS WHERE CONDITIONS HAVE GREATLY IMPROVED...THERE ARE LINGERING PATCHES OF BLACK ICE IN SHADY AND
LESS TRAVELED AREAS. THEREFORE...MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING.”

A decision about schools and buses on Wednesday will be made late Tuesday afternoon.
