February is “Love the Bus” Month
Greenville County Schools is proud to be participating in the American School Bus Council’s “Love the Bus” campaign during the month of February. GCS will feature the story of one of its dedicated drivers each week in February.
Delores Sullivan has been driving a bus for Greenville County Schools for 23 years. She says she enjoys the interaction with the children she drives at Oakview Elementary and Mauldin High School. “When they get on I tell them ‘Welcome aboard’ or ‘Good morning” and when they come out of school I will ask them how was their day, a lot of them they brighten up my day, it goes both ways.”
Steve was a student bus driver in high school who decided to make driving his career when his children started school. Gantt says, “The hours are perfect, you know when school is out you’ll be home with your kids. That’s important.” He says he loves the bus because it makes him feel like a kid again.
The American School Bus Council established the “Love the Bus” campaign to raise awareness and appreciation for school bus drivers. As a result of their dedication to ensuring that students are transported safely, bus drivers have made the yellow bus the safest transportation system in the country. By recognizing the importance of transportation to the education system, the campaign further emphasizes that all school workers—including bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and others—contribute to the success of children.
Making drivers feel appreciated does not need to be expensive or time-consuming. Students can show their appreciation for bus drivers by creating Valentine’s Day cards or thank you notes. Use the link below to print out a thank you note created by GCS and have your child complete the sentence “I love the bus because…” and give the card to their driver.

Educators can teach students that they can “Love the Bus” by following the instructions of the driver and by obeying school bus safety rules.
