Mauldin Middle Claims First Basketball County Championship

The Mauldin Middle boys basketball team made history by narrowly defeating Greenville Middle Academy 49-48 in the GCS Boys Basketball County Championship.  The Mustangs jumped out to a big halftime lead behind great defense and clutch shooting from Caleb Byrd and Nantambu Calhoun.  In the second held the Mustangs struggled to score early and allowed the Rams to creep back into the game.  Greenville took a late lead on a steal and layup by Donovan Soriano, but with 3.2 seconds remaining Byrd calmly stepped to the free throw line and nailed the game winner.  Byrd lead the Mustangs with 17 points, Calhoun added 15 as Mauldin won its first ever county championship in boys basketball.
