SCHSL Volleyball Playoffs - 2nd Round

The second round of the 2017 SCHSL Volleyball Playoffs concluded last night and a couple GCS teams were able to fight their way into the 3rd round. In Class AAAAA, Mauldin opened by winning the first two sets over Woodmont 25-20 and 25-23. The Wildcats stormed back to take the third and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-12, setting up a winner take all 5th set. Mauldin raced out to a quick 4-1 lead in the 5th set, but the Wildcats fought back to tie it at 10. The teams exchanged points and remained tied 13-13 before Mauldin was able to take the final two points and advance in 5 sets. The Mavericks will travel to Nation Ford on Thursday for a birth in the Upper State Finals.
In Class AAAA, Eastside found itself down two sets at home vs South Aiken. The Eagles found a way to rally and win the next two sets, setting up a dramatic 5th set. The Eagles found a way in the 5th and advance to face long time playoff nemesis Pickens. Eastside will host the Blue Flame for a chance to advance to the Upper State Finals.
Three GCS teams saw their seasons come to an end on Tuesday night. Greenville traveled to Westwood and battled for 5 sets before falling 16-14 in the final frame. Blue Ridge lost in three sets on the road at Aiken. And in Class AAAAA a legend coached her final match as Hillcrest fell to TL Hanna in four sets. Head Coach Lynn Avant who has won five State Championships and more than 700 games in her coaching career announced this season would be her last at the helm for the Rams.
