GCS Athletics: Week of 11/27 - 12/02
The winter sports regular season officially started on November 27th. This week Greenville County Schools basketball teams will take to the court to officially start their 2017-18 campaigns. The Eastside boys team had a great pre-season, winning the Greenville County Tip-Off with a team that looks to be deep and ready to contend in Class AAAA. Southside boys return all but one starter from last years state championship team. The Tigers begin their defense of the AAA title at home on Tuesday vs JL Mann. The Patriots are breaking in new coaches for the boys and girls teams this year. Michael Morrison (boys) and Lamont Wakefield (girls) will look to turn their programs around. The Wade Hampton and Greenville girls teams both return a lot of talent from teams that advanced to the State and Upper State finals a year ago. Madisen Smith, who committed to West Virginia this fall, will lead the Raiders as they open up at home vs Christ Church on Tuesday night. The Wade Hampton girls and boys teams look to be contenders in Class AAAAA this winter. The Generals open their regular season Tuesday at home vs rival Eastside.
In wrestling, Eastside looks to be the team to beat yet again this year. The Eagles will host Southern Slam this weekend featuring teams from across the state and region. Woodmont will also host a big tournament this weekend as the Wildcat Invitational will jump stat the wrestling season for teams around the Upstate. Middle school basketball also tips off this week. Blue Ridge girls and Sevier boys are the defending county champions. Blue Ridge returns the majority of their core from a season ago. Sevier will be replacing a good chunk of their roster as they look to repeat. For a complete list of events this week see the schedule below:
