Developmental Guidance Program

Comprehensive Guidance Program

There are four components to the Wade Hampton High School Comprehensive Guidance Program – Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and Systems Support.

Guidance Curriculum
The guidance curriculum consists of structured developmental activities that may be presented through classroom and/or large group activities. The purpose of the guidance curriculum is to provide students at all levels with information centered on three main competency areas:  Academic, Personal/Social, and Career Development.  Counselors work with students, families, and teachers to determine specific needs that need to be addressed.
Examples of topics within this component may include the following: High school graduation requirements, College entrance requirements, Career planning and exploration, Study skills for academic improvement, Decision-making, Knowledge of self and others, Drug and alcohol abuse, Peer pressure, Labor market information, etc.

Individual Planning
Individual planning consists of activities that help all students plan, monitor, and manage their own learning as well as their personal and career development goals for high school and post-secondary.
Examples of topics within this component may include: High school course selection, A-Team referrals, 504 Plans, Career awareness, Transition plans from school-to-school or school-to-work, Study skills, Honors and award programs, College and university selection, Community activities, Summer programs, and Individual Graduation Plans (IGPs).

Responsive Services
Responsive services consist of activities to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students.  Responsive services are delivered through these strategies: personal counseling, consultation, crisis counseling, and referrals to outside agencies/programs.  Students may come to see their counselor on their own (self-referral) or parents and/or teachers may refer students for counseling.  Examples of topics within this component may include but not limited to: homelessness, abuse and neglect, grief and loss, suicide, violence, teasing, bullying, etc.

System Support
System support consists of management activities that establish, maintain, and enhance the total guidance program and entire school. This component is implemented through activities in the following areas: program management and operations, coordinating school-wide testing such as End-of-Course Exams, HSAP, EXPLORE, PSAT, and AP exams, auditing student records, professional development, staff and community relations, and consultation with teachers.
