Westcliffe Students Give Back

Westcliffe Elementary students and staff have been working hard this year to give back to the local community.  The 2010-11 Student Council, composed of class representatives in grades 3-5, choose the Ronald McDonald House of Greenville as their yearly charity project.

In preparation for the big game, the school held a Clemson/ Carolina penny drive.  Students donated pennies to vote for their favorite team. In December, students purchased and decorated paper Christmas lights to “Decorate the Westcliffe Christmas Tree.”  Money from both fundraisers was donated to the Ronald McDonald House to help families in need.

On December 14, members of the student council went on a fieldtrip to visit and learn how the Ronald McDonald House helps the local community.

The house, located just across from Greenville Memorial Hospital, provides families of critically ill children with a comfortable place to stay, food, and everyday necessities while their loved one receives care.  In 2010, 425 families received help from the Ronald McDonald House.  And while, a night at the house cost approximately $89, families of sick children stay for free thanks to the donations of businesses and community members throughout Greenville.  The house is open 365 days a year and includes a family room, play room, kitchen, playground, and laundry room to help families feel right at home.

During their visit, the Westcliffe Elementary Student Council had the opportunity to tour the house and present the staff with a check for $340.35.
