PBIS

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. This system is an effort to create a positive school community with consistent expectations in all areas of the school. From the hallways to the playground, from the cafeteria to the restrooms, PBIS helps Welcome students understand what is expected of them and provides motivation to comply with those expectations. We use Star Bucks and Shining Stars to help us remember what to do in every area of the school!

StarBucks

Students can earn StarBucks by displaying behavior on the PBIS matrix. These StarBucks will be given by any staff member (administrators, teachers, assistants, front office staff, cafeteria employees, bus drivers, and custodians) so there will be opportunities to earn them throughout the day and throughout the school. Displaying proper behavior will earn students plenty of StarBucks. Students will be given the opportunity throughout the year to "spend" the StarBucks they have collected.

Shining Stars

Classrooms earn recognition in the form of Shining Stars when they display behavior on the PBIS matrix. With assistance from the classroom teacher, students decide how many Shining Stars their class needs to earn a reward. The beauty of Shining Stars is that teachers cannot give their own classes Shining Stars. Instead, other staff members must notice the STAR behavior and reward the classroom with a Shining Star. All staff members (administrators, teachers, assistants, front office staff, cafeteria employees, and custodians) have Shining Stars to give to classrooms, so students constantly have the opportunity to earn Shining Stars as they move about the building throughout the day.

Consequences
Students who do not comply with behaviors in the matrix will have consequences as stated by the individual classroom teacher's behavior management plan.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Developing a PBIS program for a school is a three-year process. So, while we have made strides towards implementing PBIS at Welcome Elementary, we have goals for continuing our implementation. Our primary goal and next step is to create a behavior management system for individuals that includes both incentives and consequences for individual behavior. The challenge for our PBIS team is to create expectations that are consistent for all students yet are developmentally appropriate for all ages attending Welcome Elementary School. For more information, contact Mrs. McCuen, Assistant Principal and PBIS Coordinator.
