KEYBOARDING EXPECTATIONS
SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
2007-08

TO: Students Enrolled in Keyboarding and Their Parent(s)/Guardian

FROM: Mr. Todd L. Harrison, Department Chair

SUBJECT: EXPECTATIONS

Starting with 1997-98 juniors, the South Carolina Department of Education has mandated that all students must be certified keyboarding proficient and computer literate to receive a high school diploma. This certification is obtained by passing a standard examination, which is given at the end of the semester of keyboarding.

So that all students will be aware of the expectations during this course we ask that you read this carefully and both students and parent/guardian must sign and return to the teacher. In order for a successful completion of the course and examination, we ask that the student do the following:

Be on time and seated in place when the bell rings. Students will have assigned seats and be held responsible for their equipment during their class time. Instruction for checking the computers for the beginning of class and closing at the end of the class will be given to each student.

As noted on the Keyboarding Student Profile under Keyboard Mastery, it states “the requirements of the use of correct fingering and proper techniques to key alphabetic (letter keys) information.” Experience has shown that this impossible to accomplish with long fingernails; therefore, students will be expected to have moderate length nails. Without the shorter nails the student WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PASS THE TECHNIQUES IN KEYBOARDING!!!

1. Because of the expensive equipment that is found in the computer labs, NO COMPACTS, BRUSHES, OR LIPSTICK, ETC. ARE ALLOWED IN CLASS. EATING, DRINKING (SODAS OR WATER, AND CHEWING GUM WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. Failure to follow this rule the first time will result in having your property confiscated. If you choose to not adhere to the aforementioned then you will receive a call to your parents. If the problem continues to occur then you will receive a referral. The same rule will apply to the use of leaking bottles, lotions, cosmetics, hair spray, etc. If the equipment is damaged, the student will be held responsible for the cost
Students who feel that extra practice is needed should make arrangements with the teacher.

2. To protect our equipment, students will not be allowed to use diskettes from outside the classroom (this includes games, data diskettes, etc.)

3. Don’t forget that you are required to carry your Agenda with you at all times!

This is a course in which a skill will be learned. Because this is a skill, the student must listen and follow directions carefully when given by the teacher. Basically, no homework is given so the student must work on assignments and practice during the entire class period. Remember practicing everyday is necessary to build this skill!!! If you have questions, call the school and make an appointment or request a return call from the instructor.
