Ms. Rosteck
2007-2008

Book: Algebra 1 Concepts and Skills Volume 1
Text: McDougal-Littell

Description:

This course is the first half of a two-year program that will prepare students for academic or workplace options. This course is intended for students who, as ninth graders, and not yet ready for the rigor of an Algebra 1 class. The sequence of courses, Algebra 1 Part A and Algebra Part B, meets the state Algebra 1 standards and will be recognized by South Carolina colleges as Algebra 1 if followed by successful completion of Algebra 2. This program of mathematical studies focuses on the development of the student’s ability to understand and apply mathematics to solve realistic workplace problems. Emphasis is on active participation through appropriate project work, laboratory activities, group and individual assignments, discussion, practice, and exposition. Hand-held graphing calculators are recommended for instruction and assessment. The course will be taught through the use of best practices and research-proven instructional strategies which address the way each child learns best and offer multiple opportunities for students to master material.

Materials:

You are responsible for brining in materials for yourself. You will need a writing utensil and paper. A notebook and folder will be provided. Any items you do not have will be available for purchase.

Discipline:

I will follow all rules described in your school handbook. I will give one warning for first time offenders, and then I will follow with a parent phone call with a referral or without a referral. Each offense will be disciplined by the nature and occurrence of the offense. General rule is to be respectful. Anything that is considered disrespectful, i.e. cussing, gang activity, or back talk, will be punished to the fullest extent.

Tardy Policy:
1st tardy: Warning
2nd tardy: Parent Phone Call
3rd tardy: Referral
4th tardy and so on: Referral

Grading:

60% of grade is considered major grades; where 25% tests, 20% projects, and 15% quiz.

40% will be considered minor grades; where 10% is homework and 30% is class work and participation.

Class work will be given daily, which includes any warm ups or starter questions. Quizzes will be given periodically, and tests are given at the end of the chapter or unit. Projects will be a big part of class time and will be graded according to a rubric provided for each project. All work is a reflection of you, so turn in your work how you want me to see you.

Group work:

In any job, you will more than likely work with others. We will have a lot of group work in this class. We will succeed together, or we will fail together. You will adhere to all rules while in a group.

2007-2008

Book: Geometry Concepts and Skills
Text: Mc Dougal-Littell

Description:

This course is the third course in the sequential program of mathematical studies focusing on development of the student’s ability to understand and apply mathematics to solve realistic problems. The emphasis is on the development of two and three dimensional geometric concepts and properties. Topics include angle measurements and relationships, line relationships, properties of polygons and solids, similarity and congruence, Pythagorean relationships, circles, area, volume, and transformations. Emphasis is on active participation through appropriate project work, laboratory activities, group and individual assignments, discussion, practice, and exposition. Students are expected to use scientific calculator, graphing calculators and/or computers with dynamic interactive software throughout the year. The course will be taught through the use of best practices and research-proven instructional strategies which address the way each child learns best and offer multiple opportunities for students to master material.
