Dear Parent / Guardian of an American Literature student,

With this letter I would like to introduce myself as your child’s Honor’s English II or English III teacher this year. I am proud to be a new member of the Southside High family this year and am looking forward to a promising year. I am originally from Michigan and graduated from both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. My move to Greenville has been a pleasant experience and I look forward to meeting you.

This year will be an exciting one for my students and me. We will be exploring many themes as we study and investigate the works that make up American literature. This means that each unit will focus on one particular theme and all materials and assignments will connect to that theme. In general, we will consider what literature has to tell us about the nature of humankind. Along the way we will do a considerable amount of reading and discussion of literature. I have handed out a tentative list of major works to be covered in this class and it can be found in your child’s syllabus. In addition, we will be reading a variety of short stories from the text and incorporating poetry, grammar, study skills, vocabulary, writing, and research for a term paper. I have planned many lessons that I hope will encourage my students to succeed.

Many parents ask about homework assignments for their teenagers. You can expect your son or daughter to have homework frequently since they will often have a novel to read. In addition, there will often be larger projects that your child will be working on throughout each unit.

Grading will follow the approved scale for the Greenville County School District. A progress report will be sent home with students each nine weeks. Other than progress reports, I often times will call each student up to my desk to discuss grades and progress so students can get a better grasp on where they stand. I will also be calling home to discuss both positive and negative aspects of your child’s progress. I may be contacted either by e-mail (rallenfa@greenville.k12.sc.us) or by telephone (864) 355-8775 . E-mailing is always a quicker and easier way of communicating with you since I frequently check my e-mail during planning time throughout the day. The best time to contact me by telephone is after school or during seventh period (2:40 – 3:30pm). If you have any questions regarding any of the above-mentioned information, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Raina Farrell
