We will be exploring many themes as we study and investigate the works that make up American literature. This means that each unit will focus on one particular theme and all materials and assignments will connect to that theme. In general, we will consider what literature has to tell us about the nature of humankind. Along the way we will do a considerable amount of reading and discussion of literature. We will be reading a variety of short stories from the text and incorporating poetry, grammar, study skills, vocabulary, writing, and research for a term paper, along with several larger projects. Course Goals Become familiar with the 8 periods in American literature and apply these to the works studied. Sub-topics: 1. Reading a. Reading fluency b. Reading comprehension (understanding what one has read) c. Reading comprehension concepts (i.e. plot main idea) d. Literary concepts (i.e. tone, figurative language) 2. Writing a. Writing Fluency (meaningfully communicating ones ideas b. The writing process c. Mechanics and spelling 3. Literature a. Major American writers and their works b. Literary period study c. Literary analysis (critical writing responding to literature) 4. Vocabulary 5. Grammar 6. Research a. Obtaining and using information from a variety of sources b. Using a variety of strategies to present such information All units, assignments, and activities will be based on the South Carolina English III Curriculum Standards.
