COURSE DESCRIPTION

Mathematics for the Technologies is a program of mathematical studies focusing on the development of the student’s ability to understand and apply mathematics to solve realistic workplace problems. Students will gain practice doing work as both individuals and members of a team. The Algebra I end-of-course test will be given at the completion of the course. The end-of-course test will count 20% of the students overall average. Topics covered in this course will be on the end-of-course test.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES

• Students will understand functions with an emphasis on the following subtopics: relationships, linear functions, quadratic functions, data representations, generalizations, algebraic symbols, matrices, algebraic expressions, and problem solving.
• Students will study linear functions with a focus on: representations, interpretations, equations, inequalities, and systems of linear equations.
• Students will familiarize themselves with quadratics and other functions

TOPICS TO BE COVERED

• Review integer operations and solving equations
• Solving and graphing inequalities
• Formulating linear equations or inequalities
• Review graphing linear equations
• Graphing inequalities in two variables
• Solving systems of linear equations
• Graphing systems of linear equations
• Graphing linear and quadratic parent functions
• Describing effects of changes on graphs
• Determining domain and range
• Polynomials (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing)
• Reading, writing, and representing numbers in a variety of forms
• Factoring polynomials
• Determining the slope and intercepts of linear functions
• Describing and predicting effects of changing slope and y-intercepts
